    Madras Christian College

    Among the first few institutions to be granted autonomy, the Madras Christian College is famous for its emphasis on work with practical orientation and curricular innovations. Education, here, is made more meaningful and contemporary by the inclusion of new methods of learning. The college today has sixteen University related academic departments offering under graduate and post-graduate courses. Research degrees, are offered by most departments through M.Phil and Ph.D. programmes.

    Loyola College

    With 6000 students and 25 departments, Loyola College, run by the Jesuit Order of Priests, is autonomous, but continues to be affiliated to the University of Madras. Founded in 1925, by Reverend Fr Francis Bertram, the Institution is today the city's premier college for Arts and Science education. It has been awarded the five star status by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). It was the first college in the city to be awarded the five star status.

    Ethiraj College for Women

    Established in 1948 by V L Ethiraj, the Ethiraj College for Women today stands as a veritable citadel of learning. The college has been awarded Five Star ranking by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council signifying its outstanding status. The college has to its credit a total of 150 University Ranks, 120 in undergraduate courses and 30 in the postgraduate courses, including 12 covetable First Ranks and 10 Second Ranks in the university examination of April '99. The college, with its emphasis on all round development, provides ample opportunities in combining academic excellence with co-curricular and extra curricular activities

    Presidency College, Chennai

    Presidency College is in Chennai, is considered to be the mother the University of Madras. It was founded in 1840 by Thiru Eyre Burton Powell. When the University of Madras was founded in 1857, Presidency Chennai got affiliated to it. The college moved to its present location in Kamaraj Salai in 1870. The Nobel laureates Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman and Dr. Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar were alumni of the Presidency college.
    It was ranked the no. 1 science college in India in 2001 and no. 1 arts college in India in 2002 by India Today.

    Women's Christian College, Chennai

    Women's Christian College was founded in 1915 as a result of the joint venture of 12 mission fields of inter-denominational and international levels, with a mission to provide higher education to women in liberal arts and science. It is a government aided minority institution and is affiliated to the University of Madras.
    With tremendous progress made through the years, the college planned for autonomy and was granted the same by the University Grants Commission. Since 1982 the college has been functioning as an autonomous institution. Women's Christian College started functioning on 7th July 1915 with 41 students and 7 members of faculty in a rented building named Hyde Park.
    On 5th July 1916 the college moved to its own campus of 19 acres attached to an imposing building called 'Doveton House' on the banks of the Cooum in Nungambakkam. In 1994 the college was selected by the University Grants Commission to offer vocational training courses in Industrial Microbiology and Bio-technology in the Botany and Zoology Departments respectively at the undergraduate level. The college began self-financing courses in 1997 and now offers M.A. (Communication), M.Sc. (Physics with specialisation in electronics), B.Com., B.B.A. and B.C.A.
    A daughter institution, Saint Christopher's Training College for Women, was started in 1937 for training graduates to teach.
