The festival of Deepavali is a time for lamps, gifts, sweets, new clothes and families to get together. But how did it all begin?
Lamps are lit to remember Rama's return to Ayodhya and hence the name of the festival — Deepavali, or line of lamps.
At the very mention of Deepavali, many beautiful images crowd the mind; the firecrackers, lamps, gifts, sweets, new clothes, Lakshmi and so on. Interestingly, the many facets of the festival have evolved with the various regional customs getting assimilated.
Dhanteras is celebrated two days before the amavasya. The son of King Hima was doomed to die on the fourth day of his marriage by snakebite. To defeat this prediction, his wife lit lamps all over the palace and laid the ornaments in a big heap at the entrance. When the god of death arrived there in the guise of a serpent, the dazzle of those brilliant lights blinds his eyes and he could not enter the prince's chamber. This victory is remembered and people buy some item of jewellery for dhanteras and keep a lamp lit nearby all night.
Bursting crackers for Deepavali is a South Indian custom and is connected with the killing of the demon Narakasuran by Krishna. After the killing, Krishna freed all the women who had been held captive by Naraka. Hence the custom of waking up before dawn, bursting at least one symbolic cracker and having oil bath of purification.
In North India, Deepavali marks the return of Rama to Ayodhya. On this dark amavasya night, the people of Ayodhya light up the route with rows of oil lamps to welcome the princes. In remembrance of this wonderful event, lamps are lit and the festival bears the name of Deepavali or line of lamps. In the Jaina custom the day marks the passing into Nirvana of Mahavira. The lighting of the lamps is a symbolic, material substitute for the light that was extinguished with Mahavira's passing.
The fourth day of the festival also marks the coronation of King Vikramaditya in 56 B.C. Vikram Era, the calendar followed in North India, starts with this date and the day is hence the first day of the New Year. New account books are opened with the prayer that the business makes profit during the year ahead.
Another legend is that on this day, during the churning of the seas for amruth, Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth, emerged from the ocean. Hence on the evening of Deepavali, an aarti to the goddess is considered auspicious.
Deepavali ends with Balipadyami or honouring of Bali. Narayana gave the boon to the king of the Underworld that on this one day of the year, he would be Devendra and rule the universe. On Balipadyami day people remember Bali Chakravarthy and pray for the kind of prosperity that existed during his reign. Exchanging gifts on this day is said to please the generous king.
Happy Diwali Enjoy it :)

Silent Revolution
In March last year, a tornado caused such havoc in Cordoba, Argentina, that the government declared national emergency. The army erected tents for a medical camp and doctors of Sai Medicare who began the day by singing the National Anthem and reading from the Holy Bible, provided care, nutrition and medication to over 1,500 people.
In 2003, in a medical camp in flood-ravaged Cossack, Sai Medicare teams from Russia and Europe treated 8,000 patients and rebuilt the local hospital and ambulance station. At Aceh, Indonesia, Sai volunteers and teams of doctors from Canada and the US organized by the Sai Sathya Sri International Medical Committee got going the only two hospitals in the region, which had lost its staff to the tsunami.
The medical team that rushed to Talpetate on the El Salvador-Guatemalan border following an earthquake did some social work as well. Discovering that lack of water supply was the greatest problem there, they installed water supply to 100 homes through a $4,000 water project. In the US, Sai doctors run free health education and screening camps for those without health insurance. In Caracas, Venezuela, doctors of the local Sai organization conduct regular eye camps and in Africa, 8,000 free cataract surgeries are planned this year.
These are just a few instances of how volunteers of a global movement called Medicare with Love are reaching out to the needy across the world. In 2004-2005, more than 300 medicare camps were held in over 30 countries, benefiting over 77,000 patients.
The nucleus of this movement is the secondary care hospital in Puttaparthi, Andhra Pradesh, which was launched 50 years ago as a small four-bedded hospital by Sri Sathya Sai Baba. Today, it caters to over 500 outpatients daily, besides inpatients. A similar general hospital has been functioning at Whitefield, near Bangalore, for 30 years. The icing on the Sai medicare cake, however, has been the Sri Sathya Sai Institutes of Higher Medical Sciences at Puttaparthi and Whitefield, which have been providing free world-class tertiary medicare for over a decade.
Sri Sathya Sai Baba says, the inspiration for this silent medical revolution: Love can heal any disease; just live in infinite Love as I do and you too can do all this and more. Baba gave the message of Love at the international Sai Medical Conerence held at Prashanthi Nilayam, Puttaparthi, last month: Love all and serve all with out fanfare and ego and thus realize your own innate divinity.
In India, Sai medicare has been running free outpatient clinics in urban areas for the past 25 years. In the last two years, over 39,500 rural medical camps have been held benefiting over 5.2 million people. The free Sai clinic for passengers at Chennai Central is the first of its kind in Indian Railways. Sai medicare has tie-ups with projects of other nation, too. Kenya’s Sai organization has tied up with the government to distribute insecticide treated be nets to prevent malaria. By November, 50,000 Sai nets would have been distributed.
The Sai net initiative validates all the recommendations of the millennium task force set up by the African heads of states that a direct community approach is needed to tackle malaria, that insecticide- treated nets need to be given to all, and that the tie-up between governments and faith-based organizations is desirable to ensure successful project implementation as commitment is greatest is such organizations.
For the Sai volunteers, there is only one caste, the caste of humanity, only one religion, that of love, and only one God, the omnipresent one.

Post has a new role to perform
Communication has advances so much so that walking down to drop a letter in the post box is a memory for many. And for the older generation, especially those who are not familiar with modern technology such as e-mail, handwritten letters are still the only means to communicating with relatives and friends.
India Post’s new customer friendly initiative benefits this segment most. Now, the postman not only delivers mail at the doorstep but also collects letters, including registered post, and sells stamps. Postmen now carry pouches containing stamps of various denomination and covers. They also have receipt books to Speed Post.
The service, launched in Chennai in July, was introduced in the western regions like Coimbatore, Erode, Salem ect… in August. The response has been encouraging. This service especially benefits the elders, the disable and companies that want to dispatch bulk mail.

Ex-Example Village
Bangaon village is all what the state of Bihar is not..
When the world is increasingly relying on security system and burglar alarms, villagers of Bangaon in Saharsa does not even need a lock and key. The last case of theft in the village was registered in August 2002. The Police is surprised that not a single criminal case has been registered since 2002.
Bangaon is a paradox in Bihar, which was adjudged the most corrupt Indian state by Transparency International and Center for Media Studies. The village of 35,000 people has motorable roads, electricity supply and 3,000 telephone connections, and is an example in communal harmony. Brahmins come to Muslim’s home for Muharram and Brahmins will go to their homes to celebrate Holi.
The Panchayat and the Sarvopakarinee Sansthan Dharma Sabha sort out disputes. The Dharma Sabha was the birth child of a Babua Khan, the father of Bangaon, who opened a school 98 years ago Bangaon’s literacy rate (70%) is more than double the district average of 29%, and the village has produced three IAS and two IPS officers, hundreds of other government servants, and 30 doctors. Four of its villagers have struck it rich in the US and Germany and have built impressive Dollar houses in Bangaon.
The Dharma Sabha’s influence is all pervading. Babua Khan taught people to respect elders by touching their feet, a system that is still in. Social evils like dowry are a taboo in the village. Boys and girls seldom marry outside the village. A man Ram Narain Khan a retired major, have 13 children; 11 married in Bangaon. The title Khan is common among Brahmins and they believe that Muslim rulers conferred it to reward bravery of two Thakur brothers or some others who defended the honour of their women.
The Buddha had visited Bangaon after he attained enlightenment. He chose two disciples. The village is called Aapan Nigam in Buddhist literature later it became Bangaon because of it being surrounded by ban (jungle). Adi Shankaracharya, too, is said to have set his foot in the village, but Baba Laxminath Gosai is a more popular saint and wrongdoers. According to Freedo Struggle of Saharsa by Abhaya Shankar Khan, people here unfurled the Indian flag on August 13,1947 itself.
The villagers are aware that freedom comes from collective responsibility. Major decisions ever on whom to vote for are by consensus. They were never forced to vote for any candidate, but they follow the decision. No wonder the politicians feel lucky to preside over a function here.

Very sad news for me
He is a non-fear person; he will do all risk works and hard worker in field. 12 years back he lost his left eye, where the bike he traveled was accident with a car. With in a single eye he will drive bike and tractors. Some years before he got kidney problem and his kidney was failure, they he done kidney transplantation, after the transplantation doctor told him to take rest, but he dint obey, he stared his farm work, yes he is a former. One day he spread insect’s medicine for his field; there he got the trouble, the insect medicine went into his body and again his kidney was failures. Then he did another transplantation, after keeping the kidney in his body the kidney color was changed into blue and the kidney was waste, they removed it. For one and a half years he was living with the help of doing Dialyses. While dialyses he will feel dead pain, but he take it easy and don’t show that in his face. Today morning he was died in his sleep.
I am very surprised to see his work on field, when every we go to his village, he will take us to the field. He will climb the coconut tree and pick the coconuts and give us, he will take us to the forest and will all pick casiunuts (mundhri parupu) and burn it and eat. And we will bath on the small river, where the water will go to field. It was a very happiest days in my life. He has two children. I do no how they will live without their father, is very sad.
Let his soul in peace, god will bless there family.

Great sea battle
Nelson used a combination of strategy and practical management to help Britain survive the 22 year struggle with Revolutionary and Napoleonic France. He understood that the real threat was the destruction of her global commercial system. At the start of the battle, when the first British ships arrived, they were fighting a far greater number of enemy ships. They won the day because of their speed and flexibility. The real triumph was not of 27 ships against 33, but of 12 against 22.
Nelson was killed in this historic battle.
The 200th anniversary of Nelson's death takes place on October 21, 2005, with a VIP dinner on board Victory as well as by numerous events in the Portsmouth area. The event on October 23 will focus on Portsmouth where his flagship HMS Victory is based. There will be a review of vessels from 30 countries as well as a remembrance service at St Paul's Cathedral in London, where Nelson is buried.
Celebrations will also be held in Trafalgar Square under Nelson's column.
The Royal Navy fleet will be illuminated amid a firework display and there will be a theatrical illustration of a Napoleonic-era sea battle. Other celebrations included a son et lumiere (sound and light show) at Portsmouth in June. An International Drumhead Ceremony, to remember those who died in conflict was also held .
In memory of a stunning victory
Trafalgar Square was built to commemorate the Battle of Trafalgar in which the British won a victory over the combined French and Spanish navies.
Situated on the thoroughfare between the Strand and Aldwych on one side, and the Whitehall and Parliament on the other, the Trafalgar Square was built to commemorate the naval Battle of Trafalgar in which the British won a stunning victory over the combined French and Spanish navies in 1805.
The Battle of Trafalgar also proved that the British navy was much superior to that of the French navy under that invincible master of Europe, Napolean Bonaparte. The Square was designed and laid out by Victorian architect, Nash, between 1829 and 1850. In the central part of the Square is a huge column 172 feet high, on the top of which is the statue of Lord Nelson. The fluted granite column rises from a high base guarded by four lions.
The British Admiral Horatio Nelson, while leading the British victory in the battle of Trafalgar, lost his life on October 21, 1805. The victorious nation gave a befitting funeral to the victor and Nelson was buried in the premises of St. Paul's Cathedral, London. On the occasion of the anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar, the British navy organises one of the biggest gatherings of British boats and sailors in British waters to mark the occasion.
It is also expected that a few hundred of the descendants of the participants of the Trafalgar battle from all over the world will join the celebrations this year.

My Eye view of Gajini
Mom, Dad, & me went to Prathana Drive-in to watch Gajini on Saturday evening. I am very happy to go out with family. Every time I like to go for theater before 10 minutes, to watch Documentary films, that day they put Indo-Africa conference in Indonesia, is very nice.
About Gajini
Surya play as SanjaiRamasami, owner of Cell phone company, Asin as Kalpana. Kalpana is an AD film actress, Sanjay like Asin, and he dint show that he is Sanjay, but asin tells to him he is lover of SanjaiRamamsami. Afterwards asin told to Sanjay that he dint even see Sanjay, after, they too fall in love. One-day asin come in train, that time he save some children’s from rowdies, so rowdies plan to kill asin. Like the plan they killed Asin and beat Sanjay on his head, after wards he went to Short Term Memories, he remembers only what happen in 15 minutes. So he have the rowdy photo with him and searching, and he found the rowdy and kill him.
Actually I went for Gajini to see Asin and her love. Love scenes are very beautiful, asin is very very cute. Asin had proved his acting talent, and the comedy scenes are very good; monobala, sathian, asin and Sanjay scene are very laughter. In one scene asin’s dialogue is very good especially in hospital, Pombalaika ippathan adupuaraela irunthu valiya varaga athu ungalukku pudikkalaya. It is very sad (pavama) to see when he died.
After “Pareazahan”, Surya got a chance to prove his acting. He is very nice in Sanjayramasami character; Gals will loss their sleep after seeing Sanjay. Short term memories Surya’s fight remembers Pithamagan Vikram. When rowdy chase asin, Sanjay save her there the fight is excellent. Sanjayramasami said he will sale 5 crore cellphones in tamilnadu, I thought the movie will be very interesting, but what happend to his plan director forget to tell that. Nayanthara is very hot. I can’t hope, how I saw her in Chandramuke. The screenplay is very good; the director had taken the movie without boring. The flashback had separated in to 2 parts. The Music director Harris Jayaraj had done a good job, I lost me on the end of the song “Sutrum Vizhi” asin face is very beautiful on the end of this song. Cameras are excellent in Songs. Olipathipathivaler (cinematographer) R.D.Rajasager is played in fighting scenes.
Another hero of the movie is A.R.Murugadas; it is a very big hit for him.
Murugadas have said some lessons to society, in the kidnapping scene. In introduction song of asin his face is not good, they can change the location of the song, and dress the director had forget this. The camera idea is super. The villans face is new.
This is another hit for A.R.Murugadas after Dhina and Ramana.
Gajini is very different story, the screenplay are very is fine. This is the eye view of mine, of Gajini.

Today is my Dream Hero Kalam's Birthday
I drew did Drawing of kalam.
Today is Dream Hero’s 74th Birthday.
There’s certain energy around Kalam, be it the speed of his thoughts, his scientific charisma or his convincing powers. Every morning, as one of India’s humblest, most intelligent and learned men walks in his garden, he dreams. He dreams of everyday things. He dreams of an incredible India. He knows the power of dreams.
I admire the President of India, Mr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam. President Kalam was born in a middle-class family in Rameswarm, India on October 15, 1931. During his childhood, he always wanted to study but there was no public library in his town. So he went to his brother’s friend’s house to borrow books from his library.
He inherited honesty and self-discipline from his father and faith in goodness and kindness from his mother. One day in his elementary school, a new teacher saw Kalam, a Muslim and his friend, a Hindu sitting together in the class. She asked Kalam to sit on the backbench because she didn’t want a Hindu boy sitting next to a Muslim boy. Later that day, the two boys told their parents what happened at school. The next day Kalam’s friend’s father asked the teacher not to judge students by their religion. The teacher apologized. That event taught Kalam that people from all religions should be treated fairly.
Even as a child, Kalam worked very hard. He worked with his cousin to bundle up the newspapers and then deliver those to people. After elementary school, he went to Schwartz High School in Ramanathapuram and St. Josephs College, Trichirappali. Then he joined Madras Institute of Technology to study aeronautical engineering. After completing his studies, he wanted to fly planes. So he interviewed for an Indian Air Force job. But he stood ninth in a batch of twenty-five when there were only eight openings. He was very disappointed. He went to Swami Sivananda and asked for his advice. Swami Sivananda said, accept your destiny and go ahead with your life. Forget this failure, as it was essential to lead you to your destined path. Search, instead, for the true purpose of your existence.
Immediately after that he got a job with Directorate of Technical Development and Production (DTD&P). Kalam thought about what Swamiji had advised. He really wanted to fly planes but instead settled to make planes at DTD&P. Later on Kalam went to America for higher studies. There he learned that Americans don’t waste time and instead solve their problems immediately. When he came back to India, he wanted Indians to solve their problems as well and not just bear them. He later on helped make the first Indian satellite - the Rohini. During the 80s’, Kalam helped make the first five missiles in India. These were named as Nag, Prithvi, Akash, Trishul and Agni. For all his hard work in science, he was awarded Padma Bhushan in 1981 and Bharat Ratna in 1997. President Kalam believes in dreaming, thinking and then acting to achieve his dreams. His advice to the youngsters is to “dream, convert dreams into thoughts and later into actions.” He now focuses on the children of India to awaken love for science in their minds.
I admire President Kalam for all the great things he has done and is still doing for my India. I dream of following his footsteps.

Amazing Living
Touch it and you’re Dead!!
There are several hundred species of fish that can generate an electric discharge. Of these the best known and the one that produces the greatest discharge is the electric eel (Electrophorus electrics). This amazing fish found in the muddy river of northern South America is capable of generating a powerful electric discharge of up to 600 volts, sufficient to kill any unwary swimmer who touch it.
Special electric organ within the body produce the electricity. It uses the electricity to stun prey. It is also believed that the fish uses the electric field with which it surrounds its body to find its way around in the turbid water of its river habitat. The fish grows up to 2.5 meters long and look like an eel but it is not a true eel. It is related to catfish and crap.

Cow Power
Scientists say they have produced clean renewable energy from the contents of a cow's stomach. Researchers found they could generate electricity using the bacteria that occur naturally inside a cow's rumen — the first of the four stomachs that breaks down grass and the other fodder into a digestible mush.
The bovine stomach bacteria add to a growing list of cheap, plentiful and non-polluting substances that run devices known as Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs). MFCs are powered by electrons (the source of electricity) released by bacteria feeding on organic material. The microbes aren't fussy eaters either. In tests, the bacteria have been fed on dead flies, fruit and even domestic wastewater and produced electricity.
Researchers at the Ohio State University found that half a litre of a cow's bacteria-infested rumen juice produced about 600 million volts of electricity. The output is about half the voltage of a rechargeable AA-size battery.
There was a fish that discharge powerful electric up to 600 volts, Guess what fish is that?

Some discoveries that happened in September
The first trans-Atlantic telephone cable system began operating on August 25, 1956. The answering machine was invented on September 27,1950.
The first FORTRAN computer program ran on September 20, 1954.
Dirigibles are hardly used these days, but when they appeared, they were the first really well-powered and controlled means of flight. The dirigible was demonstrated as such on September 24, 1852.
Have you been following all that's going on with Mars exploration? The U.S. may even be seriously considering a manned mission to Mars! The Viking II spacecraft landed on Mars on September 3, 1976, and took the first pictures of this planet's surface that day.
Remember all that we learned about dams and hydroelectricity? The world's first hydroelectric power plant was opened on September 30, 1882.
Moving on to medical firsts: Joseph Lister performed the first antiseptic surgery on September 1, 1865; the first successful surgical separation of conjoined twins was completed on September 17, 1953; and the first hearing aid, the audiophone, was invented by Richard S. Rhodes, on September 23, 1879.

Our Opposable Thumb
Tie Your Shoelace…
Pick up a Coin from a Flat Surface…
Open a Jar…
Write Your Name With a Pencil…
Turn the Key in the Keyhole.
If you dint have a Thumb? what will u do.
Tape your thumb to the side of your hand and see how handicapped you become!
The wonderful thing about our thumb is that it is opposable, that is, it can touch any other finger on the hand. This enable us to pick up things from the floor, grasp tool such as a hammer, and to use tools such as a needle. Our ability to make and use tools has made us masters of the planet.
Apes, Old World monkey and some other animals have opposable thumbs too but they have not been able to capitalize on this advantage because of their limited intelligence.

Gandhi Jayanti
I draw this Drawing, last year on Gandhi Jayanthi
A man of quick thinking and sensitivity, he was also known for his wit and instant repartee.
October 2, is Gandhi Jayanti. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat. He died on January 30, 1948 in New Delhi.
Here are some incidents from the life of Mahatma Gandhi that give you a glimpse of what he stood for.
Looking at the problems of Champaran District in Bihar, Gandhiji studied a report, he found that there was no mention of problems relating to women.
That's not possible, he said and sent his wife Kasturba, and Avantikabai Gokhale to investigate.
The two women found that when they knocked at the very first door the women did not let them in. Kasturba used the ruse that she was thirsty and wanted a glass of water. A hand thrust out a glass of water, and the door shut! On further investigation, she found that three women were sharing a sari in the house and were embarrassed to open the door. Such were the stories that Kasturba took back to her husband. Gandhiji was sensitive to the needs of the women — yes, almost a century before women's liberation was talked about.
Gandhiji's quick thinking and sensitivity to the needs of the poor are legendary. Once he was boarding a train when one of his shoes fell off. He glanced down to see if he could retrieve it. He couldn't and as the train started leaving, he quickly took his other shoe off and aimed it where he thought the first shoe had fallen. Looking at the questioning glances of his fellow travelers, he said calmly, The poor man who finds the shoe lying on the track will have a pair.
Gandhi was also noted for his wit, which came to the fore in this repartee. Gandhi went to London in 1931 to attend the Round Table Conference. He did not feel the need to change from his customary dhoti. An important politician, who became Prime Minister of England in 1940, spoke disparagingly of Gandhi and called him a half naked fakir. When Gandhi was invited to meet the king, journalists hounded him, and asked, "don't you feel embarrassed to meet the king, dressed like this?" To this Gandhi replied, unperturbed, Why should I feel ashamed, the king has enough for both of us!

October 1, World Elders Day
Every Day they are celebrating a Day. Today is World Elders Day.
In all countries, and in developing countries in particular, measures to help older people remain healthy and active are a necessity, not a luxury. A demographic revolution is underway throughout the world. Today, world-wide, there are around 600 million persons aged 60 years and over; this total will double by 2025 and will reach virtually two billion by 2050 - the vast majority of them in the developing world.
In our fast ageing world, older people will increasingly play a critical role - through volunteer work, transmitting experience and knowledge, helping their families with caring responsibilities and increasing their participation in the paid labour force. Already now, older persons make major contributions to society. For instance, throughout Africa –and elsewhere - millions of adult AIDS patients are cared for at home by their parents. On their death, orphaned children left behind (currently, 14 million under the age of 15 in African countries alone) are mainly looked after by their grandparents.
It is not only in developing countries that older persons' role in development is critical. In Spain for example, caring for dependent and sick individuals (of all ages) is mostly done by older people (particularly older women); the average number of minutes per day spent in providing such care increases exponentially with the carers age: 201 minutes if the carer is in the age group 65-74 and 318 minutes if aged 75-84 - compared to only 50 minutes if the carer is in the age group 30-49 (Duran H, Fundacion BBVA, 2002).
Such contributions to development can only be ensured if older persons enjoy adequate levels of health, for which appropriate policies need to be in place. In line with the Madrid International Plan of Action, the World Health Organization launched in 2002 a document "Active Ageing - A Policy Framework", outlining its approaches and perspectives for healthy ageing throughout the life course.
· In 2000, there were 600 million people aged 60 and over; there will be 1.2 billion by 2025 and 2 billion by 2050.
· Today, about two thirds of all older people are living in the developing world; by 2025, it will be 75%.
· In the developed world, the very old (age 80+) is the fastest growing population group.
· Women outlive men in virtually all societies; consequently in very old age, the ratio of women/men is 2:1.
I plan to create a Blog for Days. Because every day, there was a day to celebrate.
