Cow Power

Cow, originally uploaded by Jeevan_.

Scientists say they have produced clean renewable energy from the contents of a cow's stomach. Researchers found they could generate electricity using the bacteria that occur naturally inside a cow's rumen — the first of the four stomachs that breaks down grass and the other fodder into a digestible mush.

The bovine stomach bacteria add to a growing list of cheap, plentiful and non-polluting substances that run devices known as Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs). MFCs are powered by electrons (the source of electricity) released by bacteria feeding on organic material. The microbes aren't fussy eaters either. In tests, the bacteria have been fed on dead flies, fruit and even domestic wastewater and produced electricity.

Researchers at the Ohio State University found that half a litre of a cow's bacteria-infested rumen juice produced about 600 million volts of electricity. The output is about half the voltage of a rechargeable AA-size battery.

There was a fish that discharge powerful electric up to 600 volts, Guess what fish is that?

I feel I should have continued my original profession as a Veterinarian, may be I should go back and work on this project. I feel nostalgic when you spoke about Rumen and 4 stomachs of the Cow. ANimal nutirtion class used to be one of the boring classes and our Professor Dr.Janardhan Reddy(Nick name Jaan Bhai) used to be teaching and we used to feel very sleepy. He used to burp a lot and move his mouth in a very interesting way(you can relate to it :-)) and we used to think he had been seeing cows eating whole of his life and started getting a few gestures from Cows. Not to in any way humiliate, but it was a big joke of our class.

It took me back down the memory lane.

You have tremendous depth of knowledge Jeevan. Keep it up buddy. God bless you

with best wishes

Indians have been using cow-energy for a very long time. 'gobar gas' is a very efficient and clean fuel - unfortunately the oil companies don't want people to get such things - their profits will go down!
