Curious Emus

Behind the beautiful statues in colorful attires that you see in my previous post, there were a dozen emus waiting for us inside an enclosed chain-link fence. The second largest living birds by height, after its ratite relative, the ostrich, were seen too curious watching at us and the way they raise their heads and peep out from the fence was funnier.  Usually it was we; the manner (to peek) in getting a clear picture out of hindrance, but the emus copy with the attitude was really amusing.

Curious Emus

The soft feathered, brown, flightless emus are protected inside a chain-link fence connected with rusted poles. Though it wasn’t inviting and anyone could give a miss to the birds if not observed due to the abandoned park setting around. It was really good to see more emus than the couple of ones we saw in Javadu hills, and they stare at us with great intense and pointed beak could scare anyone.

Emus can reach up to 6.2 ft in height, and travel great distances and run at a speed of 50km/h if necessary. Interesting to note, emus drink infrequently but take in copious amounts of water when the opportunity arises and they forage on variety of plants and insects and also go for weeks without eating. Fence and gated field

Gated Field

Last month I went for an outing with family on ECR (east coast road) and came via GST (grand southern trunk) road and during the ride across countryside, I find some gates and the above one was opposite to where we had our lunch (that we brought from home) beside a village pump set and well.

IMG_0809

The closed gate seems to be the entry to the paddy field that was fenced around, perhaps to protect from cattle or marking their plot and field. The gate with lush green paddy fields inside insist me not to miss the opportunity and being a devote of Good Fences meme, by Run aRound Ranch, wants me to capture it for the series.

Couple of balcony rails

From the houses of neighbors

IMG_0735

During my staying in the upper portion of this house when the torrential rain and flood struck here in the beginning of December, last year, I got to shoot some photos on the surroundings and find some baloney rails on the neighbor's house and I shot to share on Good Fences meme, at Run a Round Ranch.

IMG_0744

The first one was inspiring to shoot on, as I find the design and coloring of the rail prettier. The other one was shot from the house opposite to ours, though it was attractive alike the former, I like the black rails in backdrop of coconut palms. The resident of the house has put to dry clothes on cords tied across the railing.

Fence across Field

For today’s Good Fences meme, I share a picture from Javadhu Hills – an extension of the Eastern Ghats, near Vellore.

Fence and Paddy fields

And here’s a fence run across a patch of step paddy fields, adjoining a pool of water near Jamunamarathur – a major village and town that connect many mountainous villages of Javadhu Hills.  I visited this place in 2013.

Highways Divider

Every time I was on National Highways, I try to capture some images on the road and like taking long angle shots for a wonderful perspective on the pretty neat lanes... somewhere there are dividers in flowering plants, bloom in dazzling colors seems picturesque to shoot.

Highways Divider

The eye-catching yellow dividers here is on NH 46 – Chennai-Bangalore highways. I shot these photos long back when driving back from Bangalore and this part of road is somewhere between Ambum and Vellore, I guess.

Fence and Flowers - Torch Lily

Torch Lily

Kniphofia is the scientific name of the Torch Lily (which also known as Tritom and Red Hot Poker due to the shape and color of its inflorescence) I found near Ooty, across a chain link fence. The flowering plants are native to Africa and have narrow, grass-like leaves that reminiscent of a lily, and the flower head can reach up to 1.52 m in height. There are many varieties of touch lily and they bloom at different times during the growing season and comprise flowers color in red, orange and yellow, often bi-colored.

Shooting Wood Fence

Wood fence

The lookalike country fence here was erected for a film shoot (Shanker’s “I”) and it was shot during my vacation to Kodaikanal in year 2013. The fence along a gate (click here) was pretty good and represents a real farmhouse entry and this location was shot in such a beautiful way in the movie I. The setting was put up on a little mound facing grasslands, pine and eucalyptus plantation/forest near Kavunji, about 35km from Kodaikanal. And Mannavanur is a place very close to this location, which has been shooting hub for many movies with rolling grasslands and sheep farm.

Gate gets painted and painters on work

Painters on work

Thinking about what to post for “Run a Round Ranch’s” Good Fences, I casually come out of the home and saw painters painting the gate of a newly constructing apartment right opposite to our house caught my attention. Though the three storey building rose even before we shifted to this home, the work has been reached its final stage only now with just paintings left to complete the structure. The builders have done some neat designing on the exterior, which I hope to capture once the building is completed. So now, here is a gate (one of the two) being painted in black on top of yellowish coating and I hope you like my candid on the painters J

A house, fence/rail and flowers

A house with white flowers

This is a house opposite to my great aunt’s in Neelankarai, Chennai, and I casually shot these photos at different time period and it is a pretty house with flowering shrubs around and my point of shoots here, were on flowers.

It was kind of bungalow and I have seen it from the day of building and the house sits on a high platform or basement that was supported by deep foundation!  As I know a couple of elder people were residing there along with their son or daughter, both seems to be married.

Same house in yellow blossoms

The house has two spacious baloneys extends from the first floor, has a tiled roof and portico... they have also captured a theme of red, green and white to the building that colors the roof and balcony, and grills/rails and windows to look neat.

Park Fence

Park fence

Last week I went to a corporation park in the neighborhood, in my new powered wheelchair before yet to send it for rectification. Though it isn’t a big park, there’s a nice footpath to come around and it has a fence portion where some shrubs and flowering plants and crotons are preserved to look good and feel greenish. The other part of the park has a play area for kids to enjoy swings, slides and seesaw and also has some colorful benches (made of planks and concrete) for elders to sit and relax while kids play around.

Flower bhind fence
A pretty flower though fence
I spent some time there watching things happening around and fun checking kids sliding and swinging around. I saw a couple with a pair of kids, who were left to play while they work on the laptop, and in between their job, perhaps looks some office work, the mother put the kids to play. An elder man got to occupy a bench for long time, keep watching me taking some shots using the mobile, and a middle age couple was relaxing aside after taking some walks around the park.

Park fence and tree
A tree close to the entrance gate
The fence that covering the green area seems to be a kind of chain-link, daubed in green. Seeing the fence I couldn’t avoid thinking about Good Fences run by Run a Round Ranch, so clicked to present/link here.

Little gates and letter/milk boxes

Few weeks’ back I was at KK Nagar and come across few streets where I find couple of gates of houses adjoining one another. What interest me to capture these little gates were the letter and milk boxes hanging from each other.

Twofold gate and milk/letter boxes

Both were ground plus first floor and the house above was painted in bright orange and light green combo. The houses on this street where built in a row and this house has a twofold gate with three boxes – one red letter box and two blue milk boxes.

A little gate
(both images captured on mobile and can be enlarged click on it)
Like the red letter box, the blue milk box is also slowing becoming my favorite thing and I find more gates with milk boxes these days than the red letter boxes. Apart the blue milk box, in the gate above, I also liked the simple design of the gate which seems patterned in fishes!

Steel Handrail

For today’s good fences meme, run by Run a Round Ranch, was shot from the heart of Chennai.

Statue of MGR on Mt.Rd

The steel handrail of the statue of former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M.G. Ramachandran, on the Mount Rd. The bronze statue erected across the Mount Rd, near Agurchand Mansion, was shot while waiting for the signal.

Fence and Flowers and a Link in Common

When I browse my folders for photos to share at good fences, conduct by the Run a RoundRanch, I find two photos which have two things in common – a chain link fence and same yellow flowers. The photos were shot at two different places but there’s one unity between them. Could you guess?

Picture 027

Yes, both were shot at hill stations! The first one represents Ooty and the latter was shot at Kodaikanal, both were very popular hill stations here, in the state of Tamil Nadu.

The first one somehow went out of focus, because I was actually focusing on flowers but the fence in background scored well! This fence was shot at a place where we stayed during one of our visits to Ooty and located very close to the Botanical Garden it made my visit to garden much easier in my power wheelchair.

IMG_5662

The fence co-exists with lustrous green and yellow flowers was captured at the cottage I stayed in Kodaikanal and the fence was laid as protecting the house from neighbor.

Chocolate Sandwich and Fence around Sidewalk Cafe

20150813_151205
First time went to the Chocolate Sandwich shop open by my brother in partner with his friend at Ashok Nagar, Chennai. I was way back applying for a new national Identity Card for Differently Abled, which has been pending for a long time, from the Govt. Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine in KK Nagar. Since the shop located close to the centre and on the way back, we stopped for a cup of coffee that let me check the shop in person as I haven’t visited during its opening in June.

20150813_152656
Just like the name the shop sells different kinds of chocolates and sandwiches, along with milkshakes, donuts, burgers, and ice creams with latterly added hot premium coffee. Though it’s not a big shop I like the way they executed the idea, and captured the theme in chocolate brown and green and setting up the shop prettily (opposite to a playground) which I find so ideal. The most attractive thing for me particularly was the sidewalk cafe outside the shop which was fenced in bamboo that gleams in green. The shop located in a quiet environment unless kids playing at the ground and the sidewalk cafe will let someone relaxes through the evening and ideal for friends to converse.

20150813_152814
Variety of chocolates displayed inside the  shop
The shop provides more than dozen seats in company of four tables (two inside and a couple outside) and free WiFi enable to access internet is plus of this shop. During my visit today, I find someone settle at a corner kept access to his mobile and enjoys the cool ambiance inside the shop tasting his favorites at leisure. Though I don’t like sandwich (perhaps because I haven’t tasted one before) I would like to visit the shop for its delicious chocolates and coffee. Two days back my dad bought sugar free chocolate for me from there but didn’t sweet as regular chocolates but it’s a gift to those experience diabetics with a desire for chocolates. (all photos shot with mobile camera)

An old boathouse

IMG_9132

The boathouse located at one of the corners of the Kodaikanal Lake (which resembles the shape of a start) is a pretty one and capture my attention every time I come around the lake during my visits to Kodaikanal. I think it is an old boathouse and perhaps abandoned now, as I ever seen it operated like the other boathouses that gather crowd.  But what I like more about this boathouse was its hut like structure that in a way look alike the traditional houses of China.

IMG_9131

The Kodaikanal Lake has been fenced throughout (to keep away the public polluting the lake) and these are photos shot from the car, so I couldn’t avoid fence hindering the boathouse. Hope I could get a detail photo on the boathouse in my next turn.

Fence around Fern House

Fern House
The picturesque house surrounded by colorful flowers
The Fern House in the Ooty Botanical Garden is home to many ferns and orchids. This house (established in 1894) is dedicated to W.C. Mc. Ivor, in whose response the Garden has been developed to this stage from the then a patch of vegetable garden and wilderness of Shola and shrubs and the lower part as a swamp traversed by deep ravines.

Mr. Ivor who had his training at the Royal Botanical Gardens, was able to transform the steep slopes into walks and terraces, lawns and flower beds for growing choice selection of plants. He also improvised ways and means by which he could reclaim the lower part of the garden and converted into undulating and sloping lawns with pockets of ponds left at convenient places to add chart to the landscape.
