Goats
are regular visitors into our area from the neighbourhood, where they are
reared by some and these goats are often found on roads searching for foods at
garbage bins and shrubs that are available at neighbours’ houses. During our
stay at the backstreet here they rarely come in search of food but after
shifted to the main street I see them often, mainly in front (opposite) to our
house, where they enjoy munching on the leaves and fruits of the Portia tree,
which aka Indian tulip tree or Poovarasu in Tamil. I can do a post on it later. Sometime the goats even climb on the parked bikes
when the leaves are beyond their reach. Today I saw a group of goats, mostly
young ones, munching on the leftover vegetables, from a basket placed by the veg
shop owner next to our house and I just captured it (from the balcony) to share with SaturdayCritters.

Overrun Smartphones
Smartphones rules is what everyone would accept all-round. There’s lot of benefits using smartphones and
it’s almost a pocket computer connected with internet, which means reaching
every nook and corners of the world. But at same time there are many addicted
to the device which means of killing themselves if they lost or someone prevent
them from using smartphones. Though everyone beyond age difference uses
smartphones, the young girls are so much attached to the gadgets where even
they would drop their boyfriends but not their smartphones. I read news in
paper where a marriage has been cancelled in Uttar Pradesh, when the bridegroom
family learns that the bride is addicted to Whatsapp and was always online,
sending messages nonstop to their family members. Additional news I read today
was a judge at Jharkhand court has investigated a case through Whatsapp, for
what the Supreme Court has condemn.
I think the smartphones and
social networking is overrunning its need and we are out of touch from the real
caress and brush. I feel our basic sense is challenged as we continue to rely
on smartphones; our relationships are affected to a state of broke down.
There’s a woman works as a housemaid at the neighbour’s house and she often
brings her daughter along to perhaps help her and she looks like someone in her
late teen and school dropped, held the phone always in her ear. Sometime she
was loud talking passing our home and was also bold in uttering words that most
would hold secret. There’s a young lady at the opposite house who used to keep
talking once entered a call and go on walking the street until she end the
call. She used to sit outside her home in evenings with mobile while her son
plays around she keep doing messaging with an eye around. There’s another young
mother in neighbour’s house who do the same whenever seen but from an iPad,
which almost cover her side face. And I really wonder how she holds that size always
in hand and up to the ear.
As I talk about others, I
couldn’t give a miss to one of my cousin who’s always on her smartphone. She keeps away her mobile is pretty rare and
sometime use it even while at charge. Her mobile frequently beep with message
notifications and she’s couldn’t do anything or look tense until checkout
what’s up. I know two ladies who’re always on smartphone. Though we are friends
in Facebook, they the sis-in-laws of my maternal aunt is so much used to
smartphones and one of them is intense where she continues to share whatever
forwarded to her. Other day the both came to our house to invite for one of
their newly built home, where I noticed they don’t let down their mobiles. Both
aged above 50, their devotion to smartphone is really wondering. I too use
smartphone and more lately but I’m not a kind or influenced by the smartphone to
keep on checking. There are days I unchecked the phone and I’m not an instant
responder to any notification or message. Perhaps my online friends circle is
small and mostly built on blog friends; I don’t get frequent messages and
updates that much. There’s another cousin of mine who used to hang on mobile
and he also carry a power bank along! I may sound complaining and I know that
everyone’s part of this company but overworking may result in some other way
unhealthy and we should make certain the smartphones doesn’t overrun our
intelligence or make feel numb.

A walk back in memory and demise of my friend’s father!
One of my childhood friends
father passed away on Friday and he’s not only my friend’s father but a long
time neighbor and family friends whose relationship were grown from my
grandparents generation. Karthi and Vela are our (me and bro) best childhood
friends and our friendship lasted for very long time but only Karthi was in
touch with me and even after we shifted our home a decade back we used to
enquire every time meeting either. But after shifted back to the neighborhood
(close to our native house here) a year back, I happen to meet him often while
coming around the neighborhood in the wheelchair by evenings, and I also meet
his father while crossing his home where he used to be reading newspaper
sitting outside his home. I can’t believe he’s no more! Even few days before
his death, he inquired me on walk – what they refer me to be out in wheelchair
and he showed no sign of demise. A severe cardiac arrest, all of sudden, ceased
his breath.
To describe our relationship, I
need to go back to the childhood days and back from school most of our evenings
were spent at their home front (which was at our backstreet), playing with our
best friends – Karthi and Vela. During those times he used to come back from
work, pedalling his bicycle but we continue engage with the play and I showed
little or no attention towards him unlike his bike. He was working in a private
company and his only mode of commute to work was in bicycle, the traditional
one aka utility bicycle. A classmate of my uncle (dad’s brother), he’s a very
family man and irrelevant to anything outside his family and showed great care
for his children and though economically backward he was more concern about
their studies and health. For any ailment he would take them to the ESI
(Employees’ State Insurance) hospital, which is a self-financing social
security and health insurance scheme for Indian workers with less income. Placing
one in front and back, he used to pedal them to the hospital. The way he fed
his son with cough syrup is still vivid in my memories J
His elder son and my friend Vela
is a very intelligent student and so bright in studies. I have seen him even
correcting his classmates’ exam notes that were given to him by their school
teacher and he was such genuine in his assignment showing no favor to anyone even
if they are his close friends. Being family friends, his father treated us no
different and we even had fun playing at their bed room, jumping here and there
and he never scold us anyone. One time, he took me to beach along with his sons
in the bicycle; putting his younger one in the baby seat in front; me and Vela
shared the rear carrier. We had fun playing at the beach sand and the duo went
against the waves to take bath in sea and a scare being, I decided to stay back
in shore taking care of their things while they enjoy the waves. Anytime he
sees me, he never fails to enquire and also tease me sometime with nothing ill
inside. Moreover, I ever seen him serious and an easy going personality really
makes me wonder what cause him heart attack. I know a person’s attitude doesn’t
expose on his health but ignorance plays an important role and being unaware of
the causes and symptoms of heart attack pull us into trouble that leads to
nothing but death.
I know he has experienced mild
stroke in past that forced him to drop his security job, after the company he
worked was shut down or he left the job. The only complaint or disappoint I
hold for him was that he stayed away from his mother due to some personal
regrets related to their transformation from thatched house to a concrete floor.
I have watched through their building home and destruction of the former, but
my connectivity with the friends (Karthi and Vela) and visit to their house has
diminished slowly as my mobility become restricted, the diversion in lifestyle
brought each ends loose and tied somewhere. But shifting back to the native
neighborhood makes me feel of reconnecting and creates chances to keep in
touch… but I didn’t expect this disconnection from him quite. I really forget
to say about his wife, who has been a great support to their family not only by
love and affection and caring but also economically she aided by grinding flours
to others who can’t do themselves at their
home. Hope his family and my
friends gather strength to bear his lose.

Flood relief or payment to vote?
Why should everyone get flood
relief amount when really haven’t affected? Life get affected during the season of rain is
normal, though the past season had been terrific and almost everyone undergone
an experience on first, but there are certain areas and people where the affect
has been least and at some places there was only power cut and was back to
normal in 2-3 days. Are they (the govt.) conducting survey on really who are
affected? I think two third of the relief amount goes to unaffected and those
experienced trouble are still in need. There are places on the bank of rivers,
canals and lakes lost away nearly everything and how come this minimum amount
of Rs.5000-10,000 is enough to bring back their lives to normal? Govt. should
cut off giving relief even to people staying above two stories with no record
of flood in their area or home and the amount should be added to those severely
affected.
Though we are one of the affected
houses, experienced flood or water entered the home, we haven’t received the
relief amount yet when many went through plain power outages used the
opportunity and acquired the money. Not that I am envy or against their
attitude of getting money when really haven’t affected, and what affected us is
nothing much compared to those living in low lying areas and on the bank of
rivers. When people make amount like this, the true cause of relief becomes
incomplete and those affected continue to wade through post disaster and
distress. The govt. and officers in charge should understand who really needs
relief and how prior it should be. I just wonder what’s in the mind of
government and although it’s obvious that the relief was given in mind of
upcoming assemble election; this is how people are measured even at the
critical situation like this?

My Deepavali Celebration and Rain
This year’s Deepavali
was somehow fun despite the northeast monsoon rain rocked the Chennai, as well
the entire state. I think the rain is very important, which let us survive
throughout the year rather the one day celebration Deepavali! Fireworks can be
ignited on any other day or skip to Karthigai Deepam, if rain permits, but when
drought stroke the heart of the state – Chennai – the real celebration was
receiving rain. Though everyone was happy about the rainfall, thanks to deep
depression in Bay of Bengal, the storm that landfall near Cuddalore suffered a
lot on the day ahead to Deepavali and still fighting to come out of the flooded
water. The Chennai experience showering throughout the day, though not heaver, the
festival of light was burnt and bound little for the day.
Sparkling Ground Chakra on wet floor |
I bought some
fireworks for Deepavali through online shopping. Glad the leading firework manufactures
open there own site for purchasing, with a demonstration video on each firework
on how it displays. I was certain not to get any crackers that make noise, as I
myself could not withstand the loudness these days; I went for the fancy
fireworks that make colorful the night sky (though it make noise up into the
sky, the effect perhaps is less and unavoidable) aside sparkles, ground chakra and
flower pots. Every year I used to go out into the neighborhood (on the day and
ahead to Deepavali) to catch up the festival mood and looking out into the sky
for fireworks displayed by the area people, but this time I couldn’t make up such moves, as
rain continue to shower uncertainly when will it stop and begin. I stayed
indoors all the day and to and fro to Deepavali, watching the pretty bore programs
on TV and looking at the rain whether it stop for an hour to light fireworks.
By afternoon
the rain decides to hold sometime, and thus I went to my uncle’s house in the adjacent
street and had some fun joining/watching my cousin and his friends playing with
crackers. Though I hated the noise come from the crackers, I enjoyed the moment
being there and it remind me the days I celebrated Deepavali with those
crackers (Lakshmi, Sparrow, Red bijli cracker...) and daring to hold it in hand
and throw away once ignite. I managed to stay there sometime and chatting with
them but the time came in droplets of rain rushed me to home before it started
to pour. In the evening my cousin and his friend come to home to help me
leaving the aerial fireworks and I really enjoyed our own display of fireworks.
As I was feeling uneasy that evening, I couldn’t capture photos on the display
of fireworks, so got couple of photos on ground chakra that we let last night.

Bird watching in neighborhood - Kingfisher
The white-throated Kingfisher is a regular
visitor to the Gulmohar tree on the open ground opposite to our house and the
branches extends into our compound. This is the first time for me to capture the
one of the most beautiful birds, very closely and clearly!
If there are few things that give me happiness and cheer often,
then bird watching is something indeed and among the many birds that visit my neighborhood
or the open ground against my home... Kingfisher is one of the birds that close
to my heart :)

Action squirrel with new Cam
Here’s a series of action by squirrel captured with my newly bought Camera, Canon PowerShot SX220 HS! It’s a quite impressive camera with quick burst and 14x optical zoom, it captures the distance objects crisp and clear to put me at great surprise and rejoice. I am enjoying it indeed :)
I really missed a good deal that comes in hand while getting this camera and I don’t want to miss the chance by paying little more on it where this model is on near closing its business represented by the latest models in its series. I’m quite content with the quality of pictures from this 12 megapixel point and shoot camera with features almost double than my currently corrupted with lens, Canon PowerShot SD850 IS.
I really wished for a camera with more zooming and light weighted and while studying on this format I find canon sx220hs getting prior in many area and even though its zooming is less compared to its similar feature based on brands Nikon, Sony… Canon is much better at picture quality and high speed shutter which I lack during low light with previous one. Moreover the design and the way of handing the camera want me to go for it with least disappointment with weight adding few more grams and battery that runs out sooner than the previous one… glad both the cameras hold the same batter for me to use one as spare while traveling.
Back in action, the cute lil squirrel was very active running here and there on the compound wall feeding on the idly left over and it doesn’t stop a moment for me until few seconds of munching… the camera acted too smart and fast capturing the squirrel never ever so clear nearby me! I’m ahead to go out testing and experience the various shooting modes it holds along extending my road trip on ECR further to Point Calimere.

A girl on never ending call
but between the least disturbance
I saw her caressing her open hair
and another hand hold close to her ear
helps listening to someone
to whom she whisper through her cell phone.
The always inspiring wind
went ahead like never to unwind
to stop her tress floating in air
that prevent giving clear picture of her aspect
stressed to various gestures
respond to the never hold out cell phone.
The opportunity seems not so favor
leaving her not so longer on terrace
for me to admire the beauty from courtyard
aside the evening breeze and setting of sun gleam
the girl’s sight is an additional enhance,
who was in love already with her cell phone. :D
Footnote:
Thought of a girl whom I checked lately on an open terrace... came to mind after reading a romantic poem from my friend Dawn... inspired to write it down.
Updated the Congenial song (check sidebar on right) with Azhaipaya (will u call) from Tamil movie Kadhalil Sodhapuvadhu Yeppadi. One of my recent fav, to go well with this post.
