Back from Blue Mountains

Last week I was in Nilgiris (Blue Mountains) for a week vacation and stayed in Kotagiri with parents and cousins. It was a wonderful journey traveled across the Blue Mountains carried by enormous mist, twittering sparrows and fun floating amid cousins and the space for breathing fresh breeze off valleys and mountains are fabulous. Couldn’t still come out of the sights and scenes that carried on mind and memories still inhale the fresh breeze of Blue Mountains, which are greener and sandstones taking place.
Bliss - wild bellis
Wild bellis
Traveled on paths that have never been or even imagined and checking the innermost nature as it is through mind, sense and images are a greater opportunity I got through this travel. It was well comfort and pleasant stable at Kotagiri for 5 days and 4 nights in the Belair cottages surrounded by somewhat tea plants and green lawn are best at leisure.

The intend of this travel was to visit avalanche and to stay in the forest rest house for at least a night, but I couldn’t get the chance as it was booked for nearly 2 month, we just checked in and out getting permission from forest office in Ooty. It was an awesome ride into the dense forest of Avalanche and Upper Bhavani, and the whole ride was among road-less with either sides of shoals and grasslands.
Belair cottages

I decided not to release any pictures that captured inside the prohibited area as it is worth to be protected from outside world knowing that it could attract anyone easily to be disturbed and I never know that I need to travel through this thick forest to check upper bhavani backwaters. Throughout the way it was astonishing climate and weather and was splendid beautiful. There was an excitement carried on within everyone as there was no man’s activity along the way and it was quite silent except for twitter birds and streams and falls noise.

Most of the travel happens between Coonoor-Kotagiri and Kotagiri-Ooty as the places we wanted to check were laid on northwest we touched either city to connect the roads and was suppose to be tire hold to the many curves. Partially it was a successful and dream come true travel, but still I hang for these places to be revisited and wanted to go beyond these place next time. Thanks to the Scorpio and its tubeless tires, and excellent driver come cousin and without them it’s hard to move into this off-road terrain in and around avalanche towards upper bhavani.

Sunday Photos: Fern House, Ooty

Fern House, Ooty
(click pics for enlarge)
The Fern House in the Ooty Botanical Garden is a glass house we checked last year during the visit to Ooty, aka Nilgiris, is home to many species of ferns and orchids. This house (established in 1894) is dedicated to W.C. Mc. Ivor, in whose response the Garden has been developed to this stage from the then a patch of vegetable garden and wilderness of Shola and shrubs and the lower part as a swamp traversed by deep ravines.

IMG_20170407_113302

Mr. W.C. Mc. Ivor who had his training at the Royal Botanical Gardens, was able to transform the steep slopes into walks and terraces, lawns and flower beds for growing choice selection of plants. He also improvised ways and means by which he could reclaim the lower part of the garden and converted into undulating and sloping lawns with pockets of ponds left at convenient places to add chart to the landscape.

20170407_113316

We just took shots of the fern house from outside during our previous visit in 2008 since the house was locked. Last April there wasn’t much people visiting the garden and the fern house was also opened to visitors and allowed to take photos. Though these pictures are shot from mobile, as my camera was dropped down that previous night, I really liked the outcome and detail on ferns.

Kodanad, en-route Kotagiri

Pleasant views

Thus it does happened to be the last day in Nilgiris, where the majority increases in our families against unbearable cold, that was the amount of clouds and rain lasted before night and make all grasping while on shopping, but am wished one more day to stay. And no arguments, I can’t go against none and agreed getting down by eventide. Before, we had much time and moved ahead to Kodanad which is 15 km from Kotagiri, that some 40+km from Ooty. I have heard about this place and the pleasant weather almost throughout the years and very calm comparing Ooty. As my cousin studied in St. Jutes Public School, Kotagiri, for a year then, so I get to know every time he describes the place and his wish that I come there before he leaves, but unfortunately he left the school when I was visiting there. By 10am we left the hostel and reach Kotagiri through some sharp curves and turns, along more green and tea estates, with clouds flew sending shades on slopes and the dark Blue Mountains...

My cousin’s school & Blue Mountains

The 15km drive from Kotagiri reaching Kodanad is full of green tea estates, somewhere people picking leaves and villages with factories besides beneath sending smokes mixes with mist and the rust lands yet to cultivate. And what more, the rain yet to come circumstance and dark clouds covering peaks are just amazing and pleasant ever. The road finally end at the Kodanad view point, where the road keeps on stretching, I am searing and still kept going around the green estates…. And thus I seek, hence I can’t visible the Kodanad estate big-house belongs to the former CM of our State and the time she was staying there when we were.

Rangasamy Peak & Milky falls

Little far that sights the Rangasamy Peak, from the view point, that seems like a holy hill for the people on this region and it’s like the peak refers to a divine. It conforms through wiki, ‘this is a shrine visited by thousands off pilgrims from kongu region and other places yearly.’ Just right below glanced a quite beautiful falls, flows like milk poured and far away through blurred mist, visible a squirm path that thinks to the Bavani River what my cousin told. More than the peak and valley, it’s the green tea gardens surrounding the places simply fresh the views and clean air and weather situation feels awesome… want to be there again sometimes later, just sitting on the monkey’s seat, ‘the defense stones on ghat roads, where monkeys sit often’, and enjoy my stay quite alone just like that.

Kodanad valley & Tea plant cultivation

It was nearly 4pm we get back to hostel in ooty, ate our lunch and get packed things climbing down the other side. The majority of those wish is to visit Mysore and it was delayed by 6pm in evening climbing down in dusk. The southwest monsoon is in rush, seeing the dark clouds to saying ‘if u stay here I will hit u back’. It’s another fun and thrill to write on traveling on this stretch towards Mysore, clearly its night going on the forest ride. I just want to extend the writing on this elevation, so it may continue in other post. Thank you.

After-noon, nearby Ooty

By noon after return from garden, we eat the prepared lunch and left to Doddabetta, which is summit of Nilgiris, meters 2,623. The name Doddabetta adapted from the language kannada, which means Big Mountain, Dodda and betta. It’s a place we nearly get a panoramic view of the Nilgiri’s small villages, houses of Udagamandalam, far away mountains sometimes covered by mist and beneath shoals and forest like thick raised trees. This summit is an 11 km drive from ooty, climbing the road that covered by both sides of whip trees leads to this top. As we move further the cold was sensed more and the quiet path (that was more than years back when I visited) of peaceful pleasantly felt. But this time I miss them all and only polluted smoke, wrappers and traffic of vehicles left.

Good thing also happens through the vehicle crowd, that they opened another way through road which leads till observatory tower. So it was easy for my wheels to get near, having some beautiful and green views around. It was the clouds coves and opens the sky, the cool and sunshine makes different atmosphere and more changes in creation of greenswards and flowers uplift the sight, but feels artificial missing the natures view. After being there for sometime we left taking group picture before the observatory.

Next we landed on boat house in lake banks, which was crowd flowing to hire boats to go around. We sat for time pass on the bank and looking around getting over memories of past and different scenes of boat rides and people. Nearby, newly built swings and rollercoaster rides added to peoples attract and the small children park adjacent to lake now turned to be a little amusement park filled with kids. Back it holds beautiful garden with roses and music played by evening are lacking present days. On way, went round the lake road through a serene boathouse, deer park and at some corner, sighting the racecourse and view of ooty town, behind the dark clouds floating on the Blue Mountains

It was an eco-friendly street our hostel lies, which holds a rare photography gallery home and a small aquarium. On our right hill there is a tea factory; just beautifully and in night it’s bright in shining wherever you could see from. The hostel holds five to six rooms with each 4 cots and plenty of blankets, still the cold not to bear. So on second day I get the idea of something known back thought to cover the bed with daily papers for warmth, though it helps at little. As our warden said, the cold was adjustable for me the further days we stay, but not many u see, our cousins and granny started to worry about the cold. After sun down, and the moment all comes together it was more fun, and having dinner and chatting till we leave to bed.

Fence across Golf Course

IMG_5603

The photos were actually focused on the scene behind the fence, the Ooty golf course and fog making way through mountains and trees, but the fence was taller than our car to prevent interruption. The images were captured on the Old Pykara Rd that lead one side of the golf course and I have been on this road earlier and I like the serenity and with tall trees of eucalyptus and pine it always remains cool.

Ooty golf course...

The road is entirely scenic and I find many yellow flowers in this area which has some education institutions and the popular Ooty Gymkhana Golf Club also reside on this road. I heard bison’s (Indian guar) are often spotted here, though I find some people taking walk on the road without any fear as it was evening by then. At the end of the road we explored a beautiful temple little further from the main road, which I will post on later.

A colourful café on Ooty-Coonoor Rd!

Panda atrium is an open hall type restaurant with a view overlooking the pretty Ketti valley. Though I haven’t visited the café, I find it colourful to shot from moving car and the restaurant seems to treat different taste buds and from their menu (in online) I find they are more specific on Vietnam and Chinese food. Wish I could visit this café if I was to Ooty again and the pictures shot last year in April.

Pykara - Reservoir & Waterfall

Pykara is a picturesque picnic spot 20 km away from Ooty on the road to Mysore. There are two things one could do here rather simply sightseeing, taking a boat ride around the thick sholas on the Pykara reservoir or walk down to waterfalls on the opposite side of dam on Ooty-Mysore main road. I have visited the Pykara reservoir once while past the village couple of time, the water level of the lake was at bottom when I was there on a midsummer day or monsoon that suppose to begin.
Pykara Lake

I couldn't take a boat ride on the reservoir and well you no need a reason why, as u could see in the picture above I took from the road, the water and boat jetty were at lowest ever seem.  The stairs leading down to boat jetty were stared at developing a terror which really needs courage for a normal being to climb up/down.  But the sight of the deep reservoir and fenced sholas beheld into mine and being summer holidays there were number of tourist thronged the place drove through a brief forest woods.

The boat house runs by the TTDC (Tamil Nadu Tourism & Development Corporation) is a secondary yet fabulous option to who like boating in Ooty, other than the one mainstream rower into the town. There’s also a restaurant attached to the boat house and the reservoir’s maximum level were seem to measure through conceal of the soil bank. But I just wonder will the reservoir behold its spellbound reveled through its dept rather watched or riding boat at its FRL (full reservoir level).

The Pykara reservoir is also a river, which is considered very scared by Todas – the tribal of Nilgiri (Blue Mountains). The river rises at Mukurthi peak, flows through Pykara and Glen Morgan dams forms an inherent part of the Pykara hydro-electric power plant – one of the oldest in the country. Mukuthi is the second largest peak among the Nilgiri and one of my dream was touching its foothill.

On the picture above u could see a herd of buffaloes grazing on the other side of the reservoir. Buffalos are the main livelihood of Todas, who also does crop business these days, breeding of buffaloes and milking and making butter were their source then. The buffaloes named after the Toda’s were a unique breed and genetically isolated population among the Indian breeds of buffaloes  confined to the Nilgiris. Apart Todas, other communities such as Badagas and Kotas also maintain buffaloes in small numbers.

The Pykara waterfall is another wonderful place to visit, where many Indian films shot their duets and action here. But the path to the waterfall doesn’t seem disabled friendly so I could make a visit to its roar, unlike my parents and cousins who enjoyed the scenic location. The photo beneath was captured by them.

Athikadavu, popular for linking with Avinashi

Following our night stay at Sathyamangalam, we headed to Athikadavu on the way to Pilloor dam and then to Ooty. Athikadavu is a familiar name in Tamil Nadu which stands for the long pending Athikadvu-Avinashi project, which is a dream of the dry regions of Coimbatore. Before going future let see how to reach the place. Athikaduavu is 29km from Karamadai, which lies between Coimbatore and Mettupalayam, but as we coming from Sathyamangalam we directly reached Karamadai without going to either places.

Athikadavu
A old broken bridge is seen across the bhavani river at Athikadavu

Athikadavu is a place where the Bhavani River re-enters Tamil Nadu after flowing into the neighbourhood state Kerala. The Bhavani River is sourced at Upper Bhavani in the western catchment of Nilgiris in Tamil Nadu. The water flows through Athikadavu is stored at two reservoirs (Pilloor and Bhavani Sagar Dams) on its way before merge with Cauvery at Bhavani Kuduthurai. The Athikadavu-Avinashi project is dated back to Kamaraj regime, while he was chief minister of Tamil Nadu during 1954-1963; it was initiated at 108 crore. But the project ever took place.

IMG_5252
Athikadavu Bridge across the Bhavani River
The Athikadavu-Avinashi project is always in talk of politicians propaganda and the activists continue to  fight in supporting the project which is estimated to be more than 1100+ crore, now. It was during the Kamaraj regime where most of the dams in Tamil Nadu were built. And many of them were engineering marvel. The intention of this project is to bring the surplus water from the Pilloor Dam, to the high and dry area of Coimbatore, Tirupur and Erode districts through artificial channels and existing streams to fill up the ponds and lakes to recharge the groundwater table.

Athikadavu, Bhavani River
The right side view from the bridge on the river and thick foliage leading to pilloor dam
Like I said above, the Bhavani River which originates in the Nilgiris of Western Ghats receives extensive rainfalls during the monsoon seasons and Pilloor Dam was the first to open its shutters due to heavy downpours, which floods the regions around the river seriously. Athikadavu being a backwater region of the dam and geologically located upward comparing its surroundings, achieving the water could be done just by means of concrete traps. This project is believed to bring a revolutionary change in the fields of agriculture, human livelihood and industries of the western part of Tamil Nadu.

IMG_5251
A small Bhvani Amman (goddess) temple at Athikadavu
Actually my intention was the check the Pilloor Dam but only after reaching the first forest check post, at the foothill where informed that public is restricted (temporarily) to enter the dam and forest adjoining the river. The road via Athikadavu leads to Ooty, but it was an unusual route that I want to explore for some time and I ever thought it could happen very soon. As I was unsure about the road condition, we had initially planned to go to Mettupalayam and take the Ooty main road after visiting the Pilloor dam but the guards at the check post promised the road was good after certain distance.

IMG_5249
A narrow mulli forest road, the elephants could hideaway anywhere
There are three forest check posts on this route and the Mulli check post come bordering with Kerala state, from where one road leads to Pilloor Dam and another to Kerala. We stopped at the Athikadavu Bridge before passing the second check post to capture some photos on the river and forest aside. The road is quite a single lane till Manjoor and passes through thick forest, where elephants frequent. But the road wasn’t good for about 20 kms and seems to be not relayed for decades.

Signs2: Tea County and WVS

Tea County, I believe, does not require a description because anyone can guess it's a tea/coffee shop, and if someone wanted to know anything else, it would simply be its location. Of course, the area has a relation to the word "Tea" because the shop is in Kotagiri, in Nilgiri county (district), one of India's major tea-growing areas.

I captured the shop when driving back from Ooty through Kotagiri but could not stop for a cuppa. Perhaps next time.

WVS stands for Worldwide Veterinary Service, an international training center for veterinary students, and a hospital on the Ooty Coonoor main road near Ketty.  Maya, our companion dog, developed breathing problems during our vacation in Ooty in 2017, so my brother took her there for treatment. He later appreciated their service and told us that they took care of our dog very kindly and treated her like a baby at no cost. They also refused to accept money for medicine. I am pleased to hear it and wish them the best.

On our way to and from Coonoor, my brother slowed the car to show us where Maya was treated, so I snapped this for memory.

Azhagai Irukirai Bayamai Irukirathu (Tamil movie)

Yesterday went to Azhagai Irukirai Bayamai Irukirathu (a Tamil movie) in the same Drive-in Theater, with my parents and cousins. Before movie start they put the, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s Mauritius visit.

The Story goes like this:

Mano (Bharath) comes from Ooty to Chennai to find his lover whom he saw in ooty. His lover Nandhini (Dheepu), a newsreader in TV, was in love with Prem (Arun Kumar) a cricket player, at the same time Jo (Malliga Kapoor) has a crush on Prem. So the Mano and Jo join hands to separate the Nandhini and Prem, they put many plans to separate them, all plans end up in vain and they are almost went to a stage of getting married. But unwanted differences of opinions lead to them getting separated. In between the flash back goes to Ooty, the mano’s love is not on Nandhini its on Jo. The mano shows his love to Jo in many ways, but she can’t understand, and Jo’s love on Prem has increased, so mano decided to join Prem and Jo, so mano joined as a driver for Prem and sent many gifts for Prem in the name of Jo. Did Prem met Jo and accept her love or Jo realize the Mano’s love? Jo marries whom? Is the remain story.

Bharath has acted well, can realize the improvement in his acting, mainly in the climax scene. Jo as Malliga Kapoor has a beautiful face looks like angel, smiles so cute, cry like a kid. Prem as Arun Kumar is a cricket player (there is no scene of playing cricket), and a businessman. Arun got a good chance to show his acting, and Dheepu is a modern girl, like to put more autograph. The M.S.Basker was acted in a sensitive charter knowing the Bharath love and trying to hide it. Some funny music and words comes in between and cat, bird fight is new. The music is nice, the songs Odivaa Kaadhalaeis nice to hear and the dance movement are good in the song Orampo Naina, and the speed dance of a fat dancer is wonder. Reanuka, who act as Bharath's mother was very funny. There is no special comedian in the movie; the M.S.Basker and the funny plans to separate the Pream and nandhini are comedy. A seaside restaurant was also acted in a important role in this movie. The heroine Malliga craves me by her beautiful smile and disturbed by sleep, last night. if ever one have a girlfriend like her, there life will also be beautiful. I like the thought, that first love and first kiss are the sweet memorable will never destroy till our end. The story is very different. This movie was produced by Cheran, Directed by Vijay Milton and Music my Yuvan Shanker Raja. I enjoy the movie.

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, a World Heritage Site.

Early this month, during the 29th session of the World Heritage Committee meeting at Durban, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway(NMR) was declared a World Heritage Site. A historic moment not only for the NMR, but for the residents of the Nilgiris and for all those who have travelled on this train.

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) was inscribed in 1999. Jointly, these two sites have been designated as "Mountain Railways of India".
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway connects Mettupalayam in the foothills to Ooty — as Udhagamandalam was called.

A railway to connect the beautiful hill stations of Coonoor and Ooty, to the plains became necessary. The idea was mooted in 1854, but work on this dream project could begin only in 1891 and was completed in 1908.

A Swiss inventor named Riggenback offered to construct the Nilgiri railway on his patented Rigi pattern.

But his conditions could not be met and his proposal fell through. However, in 1882 he came to the Nilgiris on the invitation of the Government and submitted a detailed estimate for laying the line. A local company called "The Nilgiri Rigi Railway Co. Ltd." was formed. But it was 1886 before work finally commenced on the Rigi-system in metre gauge.
Coonoor was the destination until 1899 and then the tracks were extended to Fernhill in 1908 and finally to Ooty a month later. The Madras Railway Company managed the railway line for the government.
And as the train goes up hill and down valley, through tea estates and tunnels you get to see Nature at its best.
The stations with their quaint names Runnymede, Hill Grove, Adderly, Lovedale... are picturesque. The stations are relics of the Raj.

From Mettupalayam to Kallar, the ride is practically on a level, but as soon as you leave Kallar the climb begins. The line is a metre gauge and the train uses the rack and pinion system to climb the incline. This train is still fuelled by a steam engine.
Finally, ensure you get a window seat, so you don't miss out on anything.
This rail system is unique because it uses the Alternate Biting System (ABT) or the rack and pinion system. A special toothed-rack rail is mounted on the sleepers between the running rails. The train is fitted with cog wheels, that mesh with the rack rail. From Coonoor to Udhagamanadalam, it runs on a non-rack system.

Normally when we travel by train we see the engine in the front. But in the NMR don't be surprised to see the engine at the tail end when climbing. This is because it has to push the train up. And while descending the engine is in front making sure that the train comes down gradually.

The maximum speed of the train is 33-km per hour. It traverses 16 tunnels, 26 bridges, with one big viaduct over the Bhavani. These are indeed feats of engineering, as they merge with Nature — never incongruous, never unattractive.

Cute Chamraj Tea factory outlet

BeFunky Collage
click pic for enlarge
On the outskirt of Ooty and on way to Manjoor, nestled this cute little tea outlet overlooking the Chamraj Tea factory and beautiful tea garden of same at a pretty much curve. I really loved this outlet for its cute setting around the corner of a winding ghat, with pretty neat lawn and beautiful benches to sit back and relax for a while sipping their variety of teas and enjoying the cool green ambiance. As we were heading to Upper Bhavani, I couldn’t get down or spent some time at the outlet, just had some tea and moved on as it was already noon. My camera wasn’t working then, since it fell down the night before that day, I took these photos from my brother’s Xiaomi mobile.

IMG_20170406_135736

Chamraj Tea is promoted as one of the finest tea growing from the high range of mountains in India. The outlet sells variety of tea products from regular to organic to flavoured from their own production house. Korakundah, I guess is also the group of Chamraj which supports organic tea from the highest tea gardens. They also have a Tea Centre in Ooty town, where we bought some tea packets before we leave down.  The outlet was fenced neatly and on the road side poles linked by chain was pretty rounded about.

My Garden visit

After reaching Nilgiris, It was the night in that time of transitory wet lands put into signed fears of how could deal the troublesome of cold throughout our stay in dusk and dawns. I waked in the morning thinking and wishing for the sunshine to reflect its warmth to recover myself from that ever cold night. As it happens, it was our early plan of visiting the Ooty Botanical Garden which in a distance of crossing a beautiful bungalow next to our hostel. To mention this bungalow have a lovely flowering garden of varies flowers bloomed in fair, but least disappoint that publics are not permit inside. Further for me it’s a look forward to recollect memories after decade’s, to spend more times inside the Botanical Garden, viewing more flowers and green garden as much. Knowing our families who take time getting somewhere and together nothing to tell they make us delay, so I and my cousin reached the garden’s gateway and waited for our parents to arrive. We were welcomed by the police persons to kindly wary on crossing road and security near gateway enquire us (including my power wheels) and leave us inside the garden to stay somewhere till our families come and for me no tickets were brought. Very special isn’t me :)

We spent more than two hours inside the garden assort by our families, me and my fav cousin get away from others took some path getting the attractive sights and catching some beautiful pictures. Let my grandpa to sit somewhere, as he can’t walk more, we went alike and I just like getting upward on seeing more people and green grasses separating the garden and beautiful flowers along we go, and some where perished disappointed to the early rain. The time already the famous Ooty Flower Show have been over and the left over models of flower fountain and spaceship rocket stands alone in mid of less grass land, the flower show arrangements of varies flowers on a side which closed to public view, even so it was disturbing the perished flowers here and there. The glass house yet simply beautiful with small flowers around in red yellows and the greenswards which is not allowed to stay now, it’s the pleasure u see rollover there, the drops on grasses are ever stay memories of then.

Me, dad and mom

Sticks like, the sky and dark blue colors of rows of flowers I see as something special to this garden and in backdrop we get wonderful snaps with people. The garden has this pond filled by leaves and banks of these flowers even people cross it for pictures and the roads with vehicle passing often disturbs the visitors. The crowd was unexpected and we can’t move freely though we can’t blame as it was the season end. This is one place I like to visit again and again sometime unseasoned, the grass, often changing weather, the chillness wind blowing through green tall trees… let leave to the future to decide. And I feel am making my trip long here, but I like describing it here as I like remembering them again. Hope am not boring u all? :)
