Here’s a short
video I shot on Indian palm squirrel foraging amid plants at my previous residence
in Kottivakkam, Chennai. We had enough open space there to grow plants and
naturally the ground was incline to grow grasses, invite squirrels to forage on
the scattered weeds. I truly miss the space now, but squirrels are everywhere and
I see them often on palm trees here since they belong to the specimen, I couldn't
reach them easily like before to shoot. Even while composing this post (5.30pm), I hear squirrel
shrilling outside.

Experience with Aavin, AVMs and Price Hike
Milk is an essential of life and
feeds no difference! Coming out of
mother’s feeding, milk has been the best source of nutrition for kids and also
easily digestible, it treats everyone (with no age difference) being a special
ingredient as beverage is open to varied flavours. For many, a day does not
begin without coffee or tea and to make it possible milk is the prominent.
Though they can be prepared using hot water, only milk seems to provide the
real essence of taste. I also don’t
drink coffee/tea without added to milk and we use about 1.5 litre of milk
everyday at home to make drink and curd and to feed our dog Maya.
A scene in front of AVM (pic: the hindu) |
Things being like that, the Aavin
(the trademark of Tamil Nadu Co-operative Milk Producers’ Federation Limited, a
Tamil Nadu-based milk producer’s union) have raised the price of milk up to 40
percent per litre which is ever so high in a single hike. It wouldn't have been
a matter of huge difference if the price was increased step by step (which
could be the right progress), but this couldn't be an easy task for people to
follow with low income. Being a consumer of Aavin since late 90s (when we
stopped getting raw milk from my grandfather's house as they themselves wasn't
sufficient with milk for their tea shop, because of the reduction of bulls they
reared, as their demand was also fulfilled by Aavin) we adapted to their
quality and quantity which has been content so far and suppose to be hopefully.
Though the hike doesn't seems to bother us much, will truly play a crucial role
on low income families. Just because we are affordable, can’t accept such huge
step that’s very difficult for others to come across and if the govt. itself makes
such a leap, there won’t be wonder if Pvt. overtakes them.
The price has risen within weeks
the Aavin stopped selling loose milk supplied through automatic vending
machines (AVMs) in Aavin booths. But the reality was the AVMs aren’t in
operation for long time and it’s only the staffs take the control of selling
loose milk using measures. The change in
the mode of supply is being done as a quality control measure as there have
been complaints of adulteration of the milk sold through these machines. The
organisation has chosen to do away with this mode which will cost them an
additional ₹1.25
crore per annum. Introduced by Aavin in late 1970s, AVMs has been big hit among
Chennaities as they provided an interesting experience, which I too enjoyed once,
as I find it fun dropping coins into the AVMs (after making line to the Aavin
booth to collect coins by paying at the counter) and fill our utensil with milk
flow through a pipe. Each coin let us hold half a litre of milk which was their
standard practice.
While back in Adyar, there’s an
Aavin booth near our house and we usually visit the booth in afternoon and
sometime wait in queue until the milk van come refilling the booth. Many of our
neighbours also join the queue and sometime I accompany my aunt on behalf our
family to buy milk. Mostly I like to go there to hold milk from the AVMs; even
I can't drop the coin at that height since I wasn't even a teen then, but
sometimes I have the chance to operate the automated machine if someone lifts
me up. Locally called as Button Paal (milk), because of the size of the coin
which used to drop into the AVM resembles the size of a button or 25 paisa
coin, can be brought either through Milk Cards or instant paying according to
our comfort. If milk has been in demand,
a person could buy only a litre of milk from the booth, so sometime parents
take us along with them to get additional coins or litres.
After shifted to neighbourhood
area, dad took the task of buying milk completely since there isn’t an Aavin
booth close to our house; so he used to buy milk while he drives back from office.
He also stopped using utensil, as it is
not possible while he was working he shifted to buy milk loosely in instant pack.
We don’t buy packet or sachet milk unless we couldn’t able to visit the booth and
now again back in Adyar and close to Aavin booth we had been buying milk
loosely in utensil but now things come to an end hence Aavin stopped selling
milk in loose and through AVMs from Oct
15. So we are quite depended on packet milk, but my only hope and wish was Aavin
sustains the existing quality and quantity.

My favourite kind of fence
Fence and gates always fascinate
me and I wanted to make separate posts on them in order to exhibit my photos
related to same, so joined “Run a Round Ranch” for Good Fence meme for first
time. Following is a neat fence that encloses a little pool belonged to some
cottages in Kodaikanal that I shot from the cottage we stayed above. I think
the entire setting is built to attract visitors’ esp. children but what
interest to shoot these pictures was the white picket fence.
Among the different kind of
fences, the white picket fence with sharp edges has been my favourite always. The
white fence lay around the green lawn does look pretty always and in the
picture above there is another fence line (you could notice) goes aside the
ramp leading into the cottage. Apart the fences, I observed few more things
that lay around (a small yellow pedal boat, a terracotta horse and cute cross
bridge) were also attractive.
Hope you enjoyed the fence... will try to keep up on this series starting from now. Thank you TexWisGirl :)

Sweets and snacks
Like I said in my previous post,
Deepavali is not only about firecrackers sweets and snacks are part and special
ingredient of the festival of lights. Every year we prepare sweets and snacks
at home and distribute it to relatives and friends as a source of sharing our
festival zest. Usually the sweet and snack we prepare at home was the
traditional items of "Athirasam and Murukku", though both are made of rice flour
Athirasam has melted Jaggery and patted rondure. I think people who follow
certain customs as Nombu are bound to prepare Athirasam and Murukku but there
isn't a restriction to go beyond making varied sweets and snacks.
Below is a collage of our
preparation at home:
I feel regret
now why we shifted our house from the apartment, as I think how wonderful it
has been then sharing the festival sweets and snacks with flat neighbours likewise
they do. Though we share with a
neighbour here, I feel something missing on the festival front and it wwasn'tlively it used to be with kids running around and shouting happy Deepavali in
energetic yet sweet voice. It was another wonderful scene to see kids all gather at
the entrance of the apartment and enjoy bursting and sharing the firecrackers. Most
of the time it’s only the kids bring the Deepavali snacks and greet us in their
glorious colourful attires.

Deepavali, Celebrations and Sharing
(No more greetings pls! Diwali is over two days ago)
Deepavali! Spelling the word itself
causes some magic and brings enthusiasm. While nearing the festival of lights
comes an unexplainable joy and mind began to thinks how to celebrate it efficiently
and make memorable. From the childhood days Deepavali has been my favourite
festival or I can say season, as we pick up firecrackers less than a month
ahead to the festival loosely from the local retail shops. The best Deepavali celebration ever in my life
was spent with my late uncle in 1998 and it was a period we were reconstructing
our house and temporarily shifted to my grandmother’s place. The celebration
was wholesome as we gathered as more than two families, everything was double! My
uncle wasn’t an enthusiast of firecrackers, but understanding that we are he
bought us enough and also joining in the fun warfare.
a firework display |
My father used to bring crackers
list from his office when he was in service, where they used to collect fund
and make some present for Deepavali and also arrange for firecrackers according
to the list we marked on. Unlike my late uncle, the young one was just like us
and a decade elder than me has been a prior to us on buying and bursting
crackers. He used to buy 10-20,000 walas and make electric throughout the
street, however it cause an impression and impact about us it’s definitely a
regardless act to make nuisance by
creating loud noises. Though things have changed quite later but the first and
most fascinating thing that comes to mind (still) about Deepavali is
firecrackers. Apart sweet and snacks, new dresses and special program on
television, our main intention has been bursting firecrackers. I see the interesting of bursting
firecrackers has come down and even I see changes within myself and I have
almost lost interest on loud crackers, but the enthusiasm for firework remain.
I keep looking out at sky for firework display from the day ahead and followed by
Deepavalai, I make venture into the neighbourhood looking for Aerial Outs.
Firecrackers aren’t part of our
life and we aren't going to burst every day, and it’s indeed against nature and
environment but I think they cause festival mood. It’s hard to image a
Deepavali without noise though I stopped liking the loud crackers and even the firecracker
I used to burst was only crackles or sparkles. This year the noise has come
down so much in neighbourhood (for good) and I also began to hate loud crackers
as it makes deafening, I haven’t been liked for noise even when I was able to
fire crackers. During Deepavali season one could see me then with ears
surrounded by black marks (gun powder) as I used to close my ears after
igniting firecrackers to ignore sound, so was my favourite one always been the
Red Bijli which make less noise among the firecrackers. Only last year I couldn’t
celebrate Deepavali not only from firecracker and I also couldn’t go out
looking for firework as I was put on cast for femur fracture. I know Deepavali
is not only about firecrackers, but we have grown celebrating that way and
coming out quite will take some time. As an initial step we can deny quite all
noise creating crackers and look for light and colors... according to the
meaning of festival of lights, let’s add only colors.
I think celebrating a festival
couldn’t be anything if we aren’t able to share with others. I see no
difference in people from their daily activity to festival day; they just want
to be left alone whether watching television or staring Smartphone or
computers. People lost interest not only celebrating festivals, but also from variously
activities where there energy used to be high and emotionally supportive. I
wonder where we are heading without facing each other and sharing the moment, I
think even sitting quiet beside will do magic and make sense of sharing. I
think the festivals and certain events are made for memorable to think back and
cherish about the days being together and had fun. I know priorities change
from time to time and it also depend on our need and desire but no where it
said that past has to be forgotten or ignored because we have better things to practice.
Workaholic and different lifestyle take people far way but things aren’t same
in this advanced communication system, but the matter is we don’t have a mind
or put thought to share.

An unforgettable phase, I wish to forget
A year completes since I got
fracture in my femur, I couldn’t forget the day (17/10/2013) though I wish not
to remember the day that was horror. It was also a day that I fell and still
unable to stand. I ever thought I would get fracture as I’m out of even normal
activity, it taught me a lesson that anything could happen to anybody and I almost
come to the term to accept what comes my way. But the only thing that put me
into fear was the uncertain nature of a disease or disorder. I had been
bedridden for nearly 2 months and the only difficult I experienced physically
was way to toilet. Even though I used commode wheelchair, transferring between
the bed and chair was painful until the fracture began to mend somewhat. I went to extreme boredom during that phase
as I did anything apart watching television and listen to music, mind was quite
contrary thinking whether I will recover or not. Even I got immense time for
book reading, but I couldn’t concentrate on anything and most of all wasn’t
comfort to do things at lying position.
Prone to muscular dystrophy I had
reason to worry, since it is a case of losing muscle strength there seems less
chances of recovery. Even the doctor who treated me had doubt whether the bone
will mend? But glad there was positive result within 10 days on cast and at the
end of 46 days the bone had healed well. But the real torture or pain began
only after out of cast, when I tried to bend the knee that went stiff being on
cast. It took more than 3 months to reach certain degree and to feel less pain,
I am still unable to bend the knee 100%. I don’t believe it will bend anymore
but I am content with how well it has come now. The fracture doesn’t stop here but it also
dragged me further into my future where I lose the ability to stand someday. It
wouldn’t be a matter of lose or bothered me much if it happened on the usual
slow pace, but it’s hard to accept when the ability fall prey in short span.
I could see a great difference
with my life before and post fracture, because my dependency has rose from
single-handedly to double, now, and during my days on cast and until I feel
painless on knee I was supported by three people on transfer to change of clothes.
I know my future isn’t going to be same rather it would turn more difficult,
but I never thought about it seriously and my intention seems to concentrate only
on near future and present moment. I
have a vision which is to reach as much possible expanding my world and
experience live moments with different environment and sharing with people. The
fracture has also caused a greater setback on my travelling front and due to
lose of standing ability getting in and out of car has become difficult. I am passionate
about travelling and exploring places are one of my core intentions of life,
and (also like to go off-roading (mild)) makes me believe that real experience comes
out of comfort. Hope all is well and I am back with my comfort travelling soon.

Road experience and a day drive to Thiruvannamalai
These days the road travel has
become frequent lose of signal i.e. vehicles come to standstill to every drop
of red taillights even the traffic signal shows green. Heedless, we hit the GST
road that too on the Monday morning hours has become a great setback towards
the travel to Thiruvannamalai, which also delayed the progress. But glad it
wasn't too late, since parent’s intended to be there before noon so that they
don’t need to wait until 4 pm for the Annamalaiyar Temple to be open for
worship. It has been a common rule in many big temples to close the corridor
from public use between those times. If it was heavy traffic on the GST road (taking
nearly an hour to pass the 10 km stretch between Chrompet and Vandalur), the
road from Thindivanam to Thiruvannamalai is bad in condition. The road was cut
a lot at many places and somewhere it was just single lane due to pending of
road widening. The worst thing was there were no caution boards anywhere and
the road suddenly goes down rough without a sign. It was so difficult maintaining
a comfort ride, though I am a fan of off-roader, this kind of thing intrude
when the intention was different. My
mother suffered a back pain coming out of this travel, though the road
condition isn’t a cause quite but it could be one of the reasons to think.
We reached Thiruvannamalai by 12
noon and the Annamalaiyar Temple was opened till 12.30 due to some ritual
happening with the pre-Karthigai event. I stayed (as usual) at the car along
with my cousin bro, while others went into the temple; it was a hot day and we
parked the car at the open parking in front of the temple (from where I shot
the temple tower) facing the majestic Raja Gopuram. At 217 feet in height with
11 stories, this temple tower is one of the tallest temple towers in India, and
it was built by Krishnadevaraya of Vijayanagara Empire. We waited for nearly an
hour under the hot sunshine, switching on/off the a/c and watching things
happening around. I find a group of 4-5 aged women coming around the parked
cars and asking for money, and I noticed that they were doing this like a
business. They pick up 5 or 10 ₹ from each and equally share
the money, and one of them even asked us for 1 ₹ change so that she could share fairy the amount. Even
the one who appointed to collect parking ticket would miss one or two vehicles,
but escaping from these ladies seems uneasy and they come blocking the vehicle
when it’s suppose to leave.
Sadhus of Thiruvannamalai |
The parents return with cups of Puliyotharai (tamarind
rice) from the temple, known that I like it so much and it taste was also
really delicious. My aunt had brought lunch for us along with her from home and
we bought Pakoda from the bakery and headed to the Girivalam road of Annamalai
hill to have lunch. Girivalam is a Tamil word which “giri” refer for hill and
“valam” means coming around. Every full
moon day people undertake a pilgrim by coming around the hill, which is 14 km
in distance by road to come one full round. I like this road for which it
travels partially on quiet, calm and green environment and being on this road
already once, I couldn't think any other place (or best) to have lunch in a
picnic format when questioned where? This road has number of benches to slabs
(which are laid for the devotees to take brief rest while on their pilgrim
around the hill) on both side of the road which helped us having lunch at
comfort seating. I also saw many Sadhus sitting and sleeping on the pavements
along the road, and as we feed couple of Sadhus who were resting and on foot,
they blessed and wished us in humble.
While retuning on the same route to home, we took
diversion at Chengalpattu to avoid the heavy traffic that lagged in morning as
we experienced to never turn that side during morning and evening. We always
encounter heavy traffic on GST road while coming into Vandalur, and to make it
congestion happens the building of Outer Ring Rd. I have crossed Gingee couple
of times while heading to Thiruvannamalai, but this time decided to stop at the
foothill of Gingee Fort (Queen) on the northern side of the road to take few
photos and brief on the area. The view from there was beautiful and enrich in
green paddy fields and looking up the fort incredibly built on top of boulders
hill! The way to the fort hill was inviting with lawn on both sides, but the
closed gate doesn't seem to open to me even if I have brought my wheelchair
along with this travel. It was
disappointing to see that many lakes and pools (along the way) were gone dry
without traces of water. The Madurantakam Lake, one of the biggest in
Kanchipuram district was quite desert look. But I was so glad to see a new
flyover emerged across the railway crossing that connects Chengalpattu with
Thirukalukundram and Kalpakkam.
Gingeer Fort (Queen Hill) |
It is a very important railway crossing and number of
vehicle cross this gate everyday to reach other end towns. We have great
experiences waiting at this railway crossing many times while visiting my great
aunt who stayed at the suburb of Chengalpattu. Anything they want to buy has to
come across the railway crossing after waiting long time for the railway gate
to open. The junction that called as
Rattinakinarau has been totally different in circumstance now and I could apparently
see drastic changes in the landscape on both the sides and new hope (light)
sparkling all over. After long time I quite come across the Chengapattu-Thiruporur
road with great surprise at the smooth road, which ever seemed to be same. Perhaps
first time in the history of the creation of the road that took a new soft
surface and wider in space. The Chengapattu-Thiruporur has been a single lane
less than 5 years before and only a vehicle could pass at a time and one has to
go off-road to give way to another. But now, glowing in surprise, the driving
has become quite different on this road and any vehicle could overtake one
other such easily and even two petrol bunks has sprout amid the forest and farmlands!

Renovated Kaj Schmidt Memorial
A long time dream
had come true by the renovation of Kaj Schmidt Memorial at Elliot’s Beach in
Besant Nagar, Chennai. The monument erected in the memory of Kaj Schmidt, a
Danish sailor who drowned in attempt to save the lives of three Europeans,
which include two woman, has been abandon for long time and a huge crack was
suppose to break it apart. But glad the Chennai Corporation had taken steps at
last after various attempts by NGOs and public requesting the government to
restore the memorial.
I had been
around the memorial number of times (while I was able to walk), without giving
thought what it was and why built there. I also liked climbing upon the
memorial through the broken steps and taking seat at the rear front that used
to embrace in cool sea breeze. Getting close to the memorial never seems to be
graceful unlike watching from distance and catching it during sunrise or sunset
is always wonderful sight. Against the blue sky and sea, the renovated (not yet
quiet) white monument beautifies the entire beach site, and it is also
protected by fence on four sides.
The ambassador
of Denmark who recently visited the monument revealed that Schmidt wasn't a
Dutch national like we know so far, rather he was Danish! Schmidt born in
Denmark in 1901, joined the East Asiatic Company in 1921 was sent to Madras to
work at their first Indian office, which opened in (1928) hope to buy/export
peanuts and market Danish dairy products and cement. Schmidt and his colleagues
who went bathing to Elliot’s Beach on December 30, 1930, noticed people
fighting the waves, jumped in and saved the people before he lost his battle. (check here for my early post detailing the monument's exist)
The monument
unveiled a year later from his drowning, was built in honoring his dedication
and savior attitude towards others. The
memorial originally a brick and mortar construction, and colored in Ivory was
renovated using lime and stone for the lattice window and sunshades. The
monument is stitched with stone to withstand so many years was done by
Mamallapuram based sculptor and temple-restoration expert K. Rajendran and his
six member team. The building without a stone foundation is now paved in
granite sables to enhance the stability and prevent cracks.

Blood Moon
Anew moon or blood moon... relieved eclipse.
A orange popped up the cloud or
shadow of earth
As a light of
hope, moon bloomed out of gloom.
Footnote:
I was at Elliot’s
Beach last evening and quite forget about the eclipse until I find some orange
shade on the sky. It was surprise to watch the moon unveiling the eclipse
against the dark blue sky… though unclear, it was wonderful capturing the moon
at it’s glorious.

Just happenings
The month of
October haven’t begun comfort with me as I caught up with severe cold and
cough, which make feel most irritating. I woke up with sore throat on Oct 1 and
it indicated me the symptom of cold or flu which usually begins like that for
me. I know flu is a common cause among human but the phase doesn’t seems to be
nice and passing it was tough esp. with weak respiratory system. The resistance
power seems to be very less with muscular dystrophy associates, so the
influence of flu easily picks up and become obstinate to cool down. I couldn’t
be systematic as I planned the week and wasn’t able to do things rather let
anything happen on own. Glad the flu influenced while it was festival time here
and I relaxed watching new movies one after another on television despite
having trouble with…
Our pet dog Maya
is also quite back to normal and her surgical wound was healed to let restore
her enthusiasm. It was really difficult
to keep her away from licking or biting the wound, but glad despite denied
applying medicine she recovered well. For more than a week she didn’t come out
of her favorite hideout (beneath the bureau) and only made quick in and out for
bathroom. After every haircut her movements used to be very active and become
so hungry to finishing off anything quickly. She perhaps gone though very
painful time due to surgery, for her to can’t even stand for a moment and it
made us worry but she also makes smile with her every step in forward toward
her healing. Now we are happy that we put her into a peaceful journey and
trouble free health.
My parents had
bought a second hand Suzuki Swift car to make my travel easier, since I had
trouble climbing into our SUV. The car came with low budget and good in
condition don’t want me to miss it, and swift is one of my favorite cars and
ride quality is so good and I had couple of travel on ECR before decided on
purchase. We have upgraded the tires of the car to big size to add more comfort
on any kind of road. I still have to modify the car with turnout seat, while
looking for transferring hoist to import from abroad to make further easer and
I am also suppose to change or alter my wheelchair to suit for the car and more
comfort on sitting. Later I’m experiencing back pain due to long duration sitting
on the wheelchair or improper sleeping position… looking forward to a change.

Balamurugan Temple, Thandikudi (Fairly equivalent to Palani)
Situated atop a hill, shouldering with mountains overlooking the
village, the Balamurugan Temple in Thandikudi is devoted to Lord Murugan and it
is believed that only from here that Lord Muruga cross jumped to reach Palani,
while he was anger with his parents over the contest between the siblings, to who
own the Gnanapalam (wisdom fruit) by coming around the world. It is also
believed that Lord Muruga stayed at this hill for some time, defeated the
monster Idumban to convert him as his devotee before make Palani (one of the
two hillocks which Idumban carried as Kavadi from Kailash) as one of his abode.
The Balamurugan Temple is said to be 2,000 years old, but the temple
that exists today is built on the belief that Lord Muruga appeared in the dreams
of Sri La Sri Pandrimalai Swamigal (a Siddhar or saint) and ordered him to
build a temple for him on the Thandikudi hill, from where he cross jump to
Palani. He is also believed to show the
exact place – where the temple is built – by lighting some torch on the hill,
and the people who went there were surprise to see a footprint (which is
believed to be Lord Muruga’s) on the rock and image of peacock gripping a snake
on the adjacent. Thus believed that Lord
Muruga has went to Palani only from Thandikudi and the benefit of visiting
Palani is said to be fulfilled only if they appear at Balamurugan Temple.
The road to the temple, that begins at the Regional Coffee Research
Station passes through coffee and cardamom plantations. The temple situated at
a height of 500 feet above the Thandikudi village, has pretty good road to
reach by car or take a leisure walk. The slightly showered weather was
refreshing while we drew on the newly tar road. It was also exciting to know
that we passed a prehistoric site where megaliths were found, which we actually
unaware until someone explained at the village. But later at home checking the
photos, I find that we have shot some pictures on the site that lay beside the
road, without knowing what it was.
Fabulous view from the temple |
The Balamurugan temple is also a wonderful panoramic viewpoint that
overlooks the village of Thandikudi and surrounding mountains. The drizzling
weather put me at hesitate, initially, whether to climb down or not the car to explore
the place, but glad I did so and went around the pretty green and quite calm environment, despite the voices of boys playing cricket
outside the temple premises. There’s a small Ganesha shrine in front of the
temple and it is a four pillared hall with idol enclosed in gate. The prime
temple is also a hall based structure which was extended by curved sheet
roofing and a small temple tower adorn with colorful idols and Kalasam (bass
pot).
The hilltop
provides amazing photo opportunity to capture the village and cloud passing
mounting from the side of temple, where the torch is believed to drag the
attention of people to build the temple there. They have also built a room for
the torch, which seems to light on special occasions and to give company to
events, the temple has a gold coated chariot for procession. The rocks beside
the temple said to have ever flowing natural spring, which revered as scared
water. And sand found at a height of 75 feet from the temple is offered as
Prasad to devotees. Just like Palani, devotees to Balamurugan temple also carry
Kavadies during the festival of Panguni Uthiram.
Note on info:
Balamurugan Temple is situated at a height of 1500 meter in the Western
Ghats of Palani Hills. Thandikudi is 40 km from Kodaikanal and Vathalagundu is 45 km
and Palani about 92 km. The temple is open to public from morning to evening. ( click location below for Google map on the place)

Ai (I) Audio
The hypes are something normal when it comes to big personalities in
film and music industries. But many a time it doesn’t stand up to its faith. And
anticipations are high normal when an enormous budget film is on news, comprising
people renowned for their grandeur in filmdom. “Ai” has been in progress for a
long time in filmmaking, under a budget which is ever so high in Tamil film
industry. Don’t anyone will wonder, what would there be in a film to cost so
much? Yet, the film hadn’t released (but
I hope it suppose to be terrific), the audio is out last week, witnessing the
Hollywood and Kollywood superstars – Arnold Schwarzenegger and Rajini Kanth.
The film has actors in best, Vikram, and Emy Jackson of
Madrasapattinam; and directed by ace director Shanker and music by Oscar winner
AR. Rahman. Shanker films always spoke for songs and his way of shooting is
something unique and quite impressive. With ARR music they transport us to a
difference world! Though the audio of Ai is released, I couldn’t go completely
denying the album despite being disappointed with the songs composed which
perhaps could go well on movie front or the film needed so, but I don’t feel
content with the way it was loaded. It was an album blended with various genre
of music.
Let me go first with my favorite in the album, Pookkalae Sattru Oyivedungal. The song is penned very simple, yet
rendered beautiful in the soothing voices of Haricharan and Shreya Ghoshal. The
lyric by Karky has really done justice to the song by relating the title Ai so
well. Simply love the song.
On the line of melody, following Pookkalae, Ennodu Nee Irundhaal is a song with romantic feels thought it sounds
like singing on path of pain and craving to unite. Among the two versions of the
same, the reprise sung by Chinmayi and Sid Sriram was very pleasant and
moderate at flow rather the other version that feels lag between the rhyme and
rhythm.
Ladio is very stylish song defines the beauty of a perfect lady, and according
to Karky’s lyrics the number 32 22 32 seems to be perfect. The song sounds like an intro to the gorgeous
Emy in the film. Initially it felt like
listening to a pop number from a popular English album, but slowly feels
familiar as I find it sound similar to Irumbile oru Idhaiyam from Enthiran.
Nikita Gandhi has a sexy tone and she emits words like delicate tidbits.
Mersalayitten is a fast track and in company of Neeti Mohan, the soup boy Anirudh
has given voice a man who seems mesmerized (what “Meral” sounds like) meeting a
most beautiful woman (of course who other than Emy) and sings a song with words
he was familiar. Kabilan has written lyrics (in fun mode) giving emphasis to
the local madras Tamil, which sure to strike across chennaities. I find my bro have
this song as his ringtone.
Aila Aila sounds like a sort of stage play and Natalie Di Luccio gives a rustic
voice, which seems to provoke agitation, as well something unpredictable
astonishment. This is something offbeat to Tamil audience. But great attempt by ARR, which isn’t new for
him.

Life along with Maya
Though she is seven years old, Maya remains to be a child for every
one of us and even for those visitors. Maya, our pet dog, has undergone a
hysterectomy surgery a day before yesterday as she suffered from serious infection
in uterus, we decided to let her some relief and remedy to lead further ease. We
had two options then: one was to let her deliver some pups or go for a surgical
removal of uterus. Though we had space outside the living home to let her
breed, taking care of things mattered much and been (she) ever stayed out of
certain seemed practically impossible.
So we went for the other, and she is showing very positive note on
recovery within a day of surgery and hope to see her back in normal attitude at a
week’s end.
She never stayed away from us in the last seven years, and we had
left her at home at only fewer occasions of traveling that too in charge of my
brother. She spent two days and a night at the veterinary clinic and we heard
that she was very quiet throughout the process and responded so well post
surgery. We were so surprise towards her behavior, which perhaps because of
fear and the new environment with other dogs (barking) around she couldn’t do
anything rather accept whatever happens. Though it is not our intention to
threaten her like this, certainly it gives a guilty feeling as we well know her
attitude; it perhaps could have got her hell feeling. That’s what could be the
reason for her to show dull feeling toward us and not responding quickly like
before.
Maya is a very sensitive dog and allows no one to touch her unless
she’s familiar with that person. Being
an untrained dog (and coming from a branch of wolf family), she is very
aggressive toward strangers but once she smelt there fragrance she won’t do
anything unless they take advantage and will also behave friendly if she likes
them. And if not, she maintain a
distance and also ignore them rather inquire like other. Although she shows affection
and love, she is very protective on family members, esp. she has a special care
for me and allows no unfamiliar person to touch me or thing related to me in front of her.
Lhasa Apso is the name of her breed, which originate to Tibet and so
has the name of the capital city of Tibet, Lahasa, and Apso is a word meaning
bearded or long-haired in their language. Maya too would have flourishing hair
if we allowed her to grow, but due to maintenance and hair falling we make
certain cutting her hair after a period of time. Actually it is a dog not
belong to hot weather conditions like Chennai, since inherent an ability to
withstand bitterly cold winter of the Himalayas they have trouble with summer
heat. We had no idea of rearing a dog, but it’s my brother who brought her home
against all our wishes and being adamant to give up, made her life into ours.
Rearing dogs are not a bad intention and I have no different thought
on it, but not everyone could afford a pup. There are certain things that need
to give hand and rearing dogs is a burden for people who are already exercising
enough. For a person’s desire, is it right to leave a whole family to suffer? If
someone loves to have a pet, they have to be certain about their adequate and should
never ignore their responsibility just because they brought it to home and
things will happen on its own. Apart sparing time to take care on their (dogs)
needs, the most difficult thing about rearing pets was if anything goes wrong
with them we can’t tolerate easily. I think just having a kind heart isn’t enough
to accept a pet, but need a very brave heart to withstand vibrations that went
wrong with them.

A lighthearted moment with DI
Usually we go to a destination, but will you believe me if I say a
destination came in search of me? J But you have
to, because, it happened to me. Such incredible will happen only with people like
us, who are challenged or differently abled. Hehehe… But one small correction
in this term is, the destination is not a place but a person called Destination Infinity! Shortly referred as DI, is the identity of this blogger in
blogosphere.
Usually we invite someone into our house from being inside. But for
a change, he invited me with a charming smile sitting inside our home, as I
came little late while back on a ride on ECR. Though coming back from the same,
with a different destination, he was on time at home. But well knowing about
his visit, I decided to make a quick hop on and off on ECR. Glad I didn't miss
the opportunity as I assured our meeting and it was a moment I could cherish
for very long time.
I wasn’t certain will I meet him in person until that day. But I was
quite amazed when I saw his mail that enquires the opportunity of meeting me at
home that evening. I would have easily missed this chance if I haven’t login my
Gmail on Sunday and went on my way leisure on ECR. I know Rajesh for a long
time and came to visit his pages through fellow blogger Rakesh’s blog. Initially
I showed interest on his posts on places of interest, but gradually stared to
follow his every post as I find it simple yet interesting. Though it a personal
blog, his way of writing sounds professional… perhaps because he also make blogging
as his profession with another blog.
Apart scrolling back his personal diaries, he is a brilliant writer
on short stories and reviewing books and movies. He also lately established himself
as a published (self) novelist. The Archers Revenge (his book) is a very
interesting crime fiction set in India. He is a wonderful event manager, as he
covers many events happening in and around Chennai through his blog. We share a
similar passion for blogging, which I think made us quite travel by blogosphere.
I was happy meeting him and it was a lighthearted moment, and I think
he also felt the same. Our conversation was almost around blogging, places of
interest and traveling. I too learn something about him and the meeting was a
great transformation on the perception I got on him. To be frank, I thought he
must be someone uncertain talking about, but I saw an amusement guy in him, who
giggles and shows great conscious about things. More than happiness it was a feel
pride moment meeting you DI! Thank you so much J

A glance @ Kasimedu Fishing Harbor
A fishing boat arrives at harbor |
Few Sundays back I had been to Kasimedu in north Chennai, but I
couldn't make into the fishing harbor (one of the major fishing grounds for
catching fishes in Chennai) which I have done twice long back. The Ennore High
Road was pretty much busy even being Sunday, the containers kept moving in and
out of the Chennai Port (which seems active 24/7), forced us to take U-turn at
the entry level of the harbor since we don’t want to take risk of getting
struck with those heavy duty trucks.
A ship anchored at mid-sea, seen beyond the pretty neat harbor pier |
When I was back in 2004 (a month ahead to Tsunami attack, which sent
great destruction towards the fishing harbor) the road had been so empty and we
managed to drive till the end of Ennore High Rd that leads up to Thazankuppam,
a fishing hamlet. The road travels almost close to sea, experience wonderful
splashes of water as waves crash the rocks and concrete blocks that make
seawall. It was great excitement then, when we were allowed driving into the
concrete fishing pier that surrounds the harbor, and got the opportunity to see
boats enter and exit as we come to halt at the mouth of the harbor.
Boat building and mending yard |
A boat number
The Kasimedu fishing harbor located north of Chennai Port (under the
administrative of same) is also facilitate of building fishing boats, and the
harbor has a capacity to handle about 575 fishing craft, is used by over 1300
boats. Renowned as a retail fish market, Kasimedu has 90 stalls located within
the fishing harbor complex adjacent to the auction shed. On the day of our
visit, and due to some work going within the harbor pier couldn't make us drive
into and the police had also made some block preventing vehicles. But somehow managed to get some pictures shot
from the Ennore High Rd, which u see here.
This photo was shot from the Royapuram flyover, overlooking the
Chennai Port (container terminal) and what you see there was one of the huge
cranes that transfer containers. Actually it was on the move while shot this
picture and it makes siren sound as it progress.

Thandikudi – A place where I felt quite tranquil!
Nestle amid the mountains of Palani Hills, at a range of about 1500m
on the Western Ghats; Thandikudi is a pretty small village encompassed by
coffee plantations, dense forest and mountain peaks keep it always cool and
comfort weather to stay forever. I was so glad exploring this place last summer
in June (2013) and the most fascinating thing I find there was bird watching.
Though, Thandikudi is famous for Murugan Temple, coffee plantations and
archaeological significant site, where Pre-Iron age burials are found. The
pleasant weather and quite calm environment (where melodies of birds resonate)
was something I never used before and deserves peace at best.
Thandikudi is about 45 km northeast of Vathalagundu in the lower
Palani Hills in Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu. The village is on half the
mountains of Kodakanal, hence named as half Kodai, was reached partially driving
on the Kodaikanal Ghat Rd and then take right near Ooothu and drive past
Pannaikadu. Thandikudi is about 10 km from there. Though there are also
alternate routes via Palani and Oddanchatram, apart Pattiveeranpatti which I preferred
during my course of travel, since I sought for a change, this road comes as an
isolate, fresh and traffic free unlike Kodaikanal Rd. It’s a pleasure on its
own driving past dense forest and coffee plantations with few mountain villages
making mild voices amid the chirping of birds.
We reached Thandikudi in the evening, since began to climb the hill between
4-5pm driving all the way from Chennai. It started to drizzle slightly as soon
we are on the narrow mountain road, and looking down the plains was then a sight
of active rainstorms playing on the ground. Past Dindigul, the weather has been
stormy making it only more exciting. We made a leisure drive across the winding
ghats, just being cautious at the occasional opponents since the road is
sufficient only for a vehicle to pass at a moment. The slightly wet condition then
made pretty cool as the elevation rises slowly, we stop at the Mangalamkombu, a
small village near Thandikudi, to pick a person who booked rooms for us at the
Panchayat Kudils (concrete huts) for accommodation.
Mountains of Palani |
Derived from the belief of people here that during the fight with
monster Idumban, Lord Muruga jumped over the hill to reach Palani and thus
obtained the name “Thandikudi”, which is a two, conjoined Tamil words meaning
“cross-jump”. According to an archaeological survey, there’s one more reason to
call it Thandikudi. The Kulasekhara Pandya inscription issued during the 12th
regnal year (1280 AD) records this village as Tanrikudi. Where “Tanri” is a
variety of tree (termenalia bellarica) famous for its medicinal value and found
in abundance in this region and “Kudi” means a clan based settlement. The
archaeological survey also suggests that the site lies in a perfect ecological
background, which helped to occupy continuously for more than 3,500 years.
Coffee beans at Thandikudi |
Thandikudi is a coffee hub, where the famous Leo Coffee brought
their base there. The central government has also established a Regional Coffee
Research Station (the sole kind across the state) there in aim of evolving
suitable practices for the cultivation of coffee, since this areas come under
the North-East monsoon influence with low rainfall and hence require set of
package for cultivation. The Panchayat run cottages or huts (made of concrete) had
also built their premises among the coffee plantations and canopy of trees
provides quiet environment and enrich with birds sighting. Black pepper, orange and
jack-fruits where also among the plantations thrive aside coffee in Thandikudi, the
silver oaks too rooted strong base abundantly across the mountains.
Thought Thandikudi is not a tourist destination, it too has places at
receiving end. Except for the Balamurugan temple and certain view points (that
come along roadsides) which we covered during our sightseeing, most of the
places are pedestrian based or hiking. Although we managed to cover the area within
a day, I still believe there’s much to experience and enjoy through personal
exist. The Thandikudi chapter doesn't end here, but there will be more come into
the blog through some other pretty posts.

Irumbu Kuthirai – Unfit to Run
It was another thunderstorm rain in Chennai last evening and night. I
was almost out got ready to visit drive-in for a Tamil feature film Irumbu
Kuthirai (Iron Horse) and looked at the sky and it was almost pretty dark with
clouds glooming around. As expected it performed so well, and interrupted greatly
on movie watching. Though it doesn't matter literally, the real disappointment was
already waited for us abundantly being a damn blunt movie. The lightning was
spectacular, as we watching the screen fluorescent cracks flashed across the
sky were striking much than the flicker.
The AGS entertainment has produced number of quality films in past, but
this is something out with great disappointment. I wonder how they decided to produce
a film with nothing worthwhile to watch and quite boring rather being really racy
apt to the title – iron horse – the film can’t even fit into a wood or paper
horse. It lost to felt majestic! An effective camera work has gone nil due to
lack of on-screen present and emotions. Having a super martial artist (Dong Lee
alias Johnny Tri Nguyen) and reality bike racer (Alisha Abdhullah, India’s only
female bike racer), the film couldn't live up to its action genre.
Atharvaa is a young bike racer, who stopped driving bikes after he lost
his father in a bike accident but due to her mother’s (Devadarshini) force, he took
job as a part-time pizza delivery boy so that she thought he regains inspiration
for biking. Being a strictly follower of rules, he always makes free delivery
as he couldn't be on time but things chance once he met his girlfriend (Priya
Anand), who has been so passion about bikes put him back on track (I mean a
jolly ride on ECR). Thus he encounters speed bikers who kick him out of bike
and took away his girlfriend as hostage. Now standing at an intersection, how
he reclaims his girlfriend and what their intention, remains. But there’s
nothing to anticipate different!
Atharvaa looks handsome and perfect in physique attaining six-packs,
doesn't have much chance to exhibit his ability, though being an action movie it
was very limited. Priya Anand is a
lovely lady to romance; though Atharvaa come closer there is something miss fell.
Lakshmi Rai acted as his friend. But a report says both the heroines were at
conflict whose photo should appear on the ads, for a movie where there part
wasn't interesting. The films greatest speed brakes are the songs, dragging along
the surface. Wished the film was quite action, but it lags romance and superficial. The film could turn into a messenger if they let the
hero die at the climax with a footnote: speed thrills but kills!

A cute teaser
I frequently come across the teaser of the Tamil film Megha in
television recently and I couldn’t avoid looking at it every time flashed on
the screen. Though it seems like a romantic film, since the picture has a
handsome hero and pretty cute heroine… the title (a female name) itself reveals
the film perhaps centers a girl called Megha. But I couldn’t stop watching the
ad, as it makes glimpses out of beautiful shots and romance between the pair
esp. the girl’s presence admire watching. Not to forget the film’s music was
composed by Maestro Ilaiyaraja enhances the beauty so well in the teaser.
From a small Google search I come to know the heroin’s name was Srushti Dange and she’s a model turned actress. I also realized that I have admired her already through an ad which I couldn’t recollect well now, but her cute dimple and sweet smile has something magic to captivate. Isn’t it? She is someone so pretty and lovely, to become a dream girl ;)

Ganesha (clay) Idol @ Home
Ganesha
is a celebrated idol in India and Vinayakar Chaturthi is one of the grand festivals
celebrated here on the belief of Ganesha’s Birthday. Despite being an atheist,
Ganesha Idols are my favorites from childhood and I had been an ardent of
Ganesha when I wasn't conscious about my belief, but I still like the idols of
Ganesha that comes out in various and unique shapes. I know a friend in Flickr
who has been a passionate collector of Ganesha idols and every year he used to
arrange Golu (display of dolls) from the huge collection of Ganesha idols he
had been collecting for years. Take a look at his
Golu set (here) to wonder how huge is collection of Ganesha idols.
Above
(and beneath) is the picture of a clay Ganesha idol we bought for the festival
at home. Parents purchased the idol a day before to the festival and placed
under the Puja cupboard. We made vada, sweet pongal and chickpeas along with
usual meals, and I spent most of the day watching special movies on television.
Mom
has decided to dissolve the clay idol into a bucket or tub water tomorrow,
which we have been practicing for past half a decade, instead dropping the idol
at sea or river. The dissolved clay water is later watered to the plants. It is
also believed the idol must be immersed at the end of the day of worship or
three days later from then.

My White Window
Window,
how mesmerizing and breezy it used to be! I believe windows are an essential
factor of a house. It’s a crucial player in bringing the ventilation inside our
home, to make breathe easy and versatile sight to cheers. I couldn't think
living in a house without windows and I strongly believe life begins only
outside the windows. I think not many could understand the wealth of windows like the author of My White Window and me – who spent days almost inside the
house. Window means a lot to me.
A cottage window at Kodaikanal |
The
windows are not meant the only ones at our homes. Every building installed
windows in various shapes and frame work but the view we get were almost
enchanting. I realize the worth of windows and I really want to mention
something that made me felt the pulse of windows. During my course of war over lungs
infection in early 2010, I was supposed to visit a lung specialist frequently
related to my treatment and his clinic was on the 2nd floor of a building that
we reach by a lift. He was a mid-aged doctor and kind being towards not only
patient but everyone; and he treats with due care and concern which I haven't
seen with any other doctors. Though every doctor treats patients to be cured, I
saw something special in his way of approach and patience but not a bit of
laziness or wearisome.
The
doctor room was well equipped including desktop computer and split A/C to check
patients at his own comfort level; but he chose the nature way of ventilation
though wide open windows. Being a lung specialist, no one could understand the
importance of breathing and which is healthy inhaling unlike him who prefer to
open air windows rather switched on to A/C.
Through the entire visits to his clinic I saw him leaving the windows
open, perhaps being on 2nd floor he might doing so I thought, but he follows
the same at his resident come clinic at ground level. He also advised me to
stay where I could get good ventilation. And if not the windows what can
provide us such relief; and I’m also a kind, unroll the glasses whenever
possible or elsewhere no pollution or heat occupy the space while on travel in
car.
I
know cities aren't a safe zone to seek fresh air, but we aren't lost with
oxygen is a consoling fact.
Through
window I see a world right opposite to my life inside the home. I don't envy at
birds flying in the sky and butterflies fluttering in stunning coated wings,
but I enjoy bearing fresh breeze on my face, the fragrance of flowering and
chirrup of birds and crunching leaves. Well I can't explain much how
heartwarming and pleasure looking through windows, a zone not so comfort like
being at home. But I still and ever want to go outside exploring the glimpses I
catch via windows.
There
are two windows that connect me outside home: other than the one which inspires
me often through the sights, sound and sense of breeze that caught behind the
window bars, the Microsoft windows of my PC helps communicate the message I got
through motion scenes and emotional core. Both these windows lead me to a world
of wisdom. I cherish and console me through various grief and emotions that I
experience in everyday dilute of life.
Footnote:
Other
day while chatting, the sweet Preeti asked me to write a guest post on her
blog. But for some unknown reason she’s could post it, so I make it way through
my blog. I know Preetilata for long time through blog and she writes from deep
heart and sometime lighter moments as cheerful. She’s one of a sweetest girl I
ever know on earth and her blog (My White Window), is a best outlook for any
writer and inspiration to come up with a post on windows. As
she began a happy married life, I wish her all the best.
